I also find it amusing that many "I hate this series" secrets end up being "I did not like this series, but instead of letting me have my own taste, a bunch of assholes in my life will not just let it go."
(Btw I don't know the situation, but if you really need to have a vague idea of what's going on in the HP series, why not marathon the movies in the background and do something you like? The later movies cut a lot but you should get all the major important things. But I'm not saying you need to like or know the series for its own sake - this is only if your family will not get off your back and you need to cram it down somehow.)
