I think there's definitely a sucky factor when it's music because really, shirts are the easiest way to find your fellow fans. When you see somebody wearing a Ramones shirt and it turns out they don't know who they are (or know anything beyond the Blitzkrieg Bop), there's definitely a moment of disappointment and you do kinda wonder why they're wearing it in the first place.

When it comes to nostalgic TV shows/comics/movies/etc, they're almost so iconic that everybody knows what it is in some way no matter what generation it came from. TMNT, Power Rangers, Pokémon, Voltron, My Little Pony, whatever. There are characters and concepts that everybody just knows. I don't really care too much in this category.
