You know most of those shows are getting DVD releases these days and nostalgic twenty/thirty somethings are picking them up and sharing them with their kids or nieces or nephews or ever just their friends' kids, right? Even if they weren't fans (or born) in their heyday, it doesn't mean that these kids are not fans of the show in question.

God, I fucking hate new LJ. Thanks for eating my comment, you dumb piece of shit.

Anyway, basically I was saying that, yeah, there's a small, petty part of me that sneers when I see a fifteen year old wearing a She-Ra t-shirt, because all I can think is "you weren't even alive when that was on tv!" But the fact is that the current generation of teenagers has grown up with DVDs and the Internet always being there. Meaning they've had access to all sorts of things, and that includes tv shows no longer showing on television.

When I was born, VHS was still relatively new, but becoming more popular. Which meant I had access to a wide variety of Disney movies I could watch whenever I wanted when I was growing up. But for the generation before me, they didn't have that, they had to wait until the films were rereleased at the cinema. As technology evolves, it gives us wider access to more entertainment.

Then again, I wear my various cartoon graphic t-shirts with pride, and I've never really understood the point of wearing them 'ironically' or wearing something based on a show I've never seen, so what do I know?

I feel the same way about teens who wear Nightmare Before Christmas clothing. I've told this story before, but once I saw a girl who had the same Jack Skellington bag as me, I said something like "You like that movie too?" and her response was "Oh? It's a movie?"

Ughhh.

You know what annoys me people that blab on and on about the "original" Turtles and how the new Nick show is "destroying their childhood" and then know nothing about the comic books, which actually are the original fandom.

It's really not important but I general silently facepalm to myself whenever I see people spouting off nonsense about this on Tumblr or Facebook.

I have stacks and stacks of DVDs of shows that I adore but were made and first shown years before I was born. Doesn't stop me loving them, and then buying merchandise. I just got a boxset of a TV show that first aired when my mother was 5 ffs.

If I want to wear a t-shirt with Top Cat on it's not to be edgy or hip, it's cause I freaking love that show.

How do you know they didn't watch these cartoons/shows on dvd or Netflix or something? A lot of the tv shows/movies/whatever I like were produced and popular before I was even born. Imagine how annoying it would be if my husband complained that I wasn't allowed to like the original Star Wars or Gundam because those were things he enjoyed as a child and I wasn't even alive then

I had a moment like that the other day when someone who didn't watch the old cartoon was raving about the to-be-released movie remake and couldn't even get the names of the characters right. It's like, why are you excited, you don't know who that is or why they're fighting or what has changed since the original.

But alas, it's better to let it go. Even if their justification is no deeper than "the action looks cool" there's not reason they can't enjoy it also.

[identity profile] xizarx.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. It's just a TV show, not a religion or something. No big deal.

Genuine question: how terrible is it if you don't know the names of anyone from your favorite band and have no interest in finding out?

As for the the secret, I don't see a problem with it as long as they're not acting like smug little twits who are huge fans despite not knowing anything about it. Maybe they just thought the shirt looked cool? Or maybe they're just starting to get into the show/band and don't know too much deets about it yet.

You know, some people actually do watch cartoons from before their time. When I was in my teens and early twenties I got into a bunch of cartoons that originally aired in the early 80s, when I was too young to appreciate them.

[identity profile] drowningincolor.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I still don't get this trouble over knowing the things on your t-shirt. What's so wrong with just liking the design?

Of course, I also don't quite understand the whole 90s fad and I was born in '96. I'd much rather be in the 60s, 70s, or 80s.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really get this.

How do you know the kid didn't watch it? Maybe they heard about it online and thought it sounded interesting and started watching it. Maybe their parents or older sibling introduced them to it. And if they haven't watched, why does it matter? Sometimes people just buy things because they think the design is cool and they don't care where it comes from.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
omg honestly i fucking hate people like you i'm serious if i heard someone say this in real life i think i would just walk away

you don't know anything about rebecca black okay you don't know whether she's seen teenage mutant ninja turtles. anyway people are going to wear what they like there's no point in complaining about it

i mean what a thing to be elitist about. teenage mutant ninja turtles, really. i hate this 90s worship in general, yuck.

Scooby-Doo originally aired a good two decades before I was born, does that mean I can't be a fan of that now too? People get can get into old shows through any number of means nowadays. Reruns on TV, the Internet, DVD, remakes that lead them to look up the older versions, etc.

Now wearing some merchandise from the show not knowing what it is, yeah that's kinda stupid.

anyway, it doesn't bother me, but i can understand how it can be a bit annoying to others :)

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
You had it right as a kid. Don't worry though, you can go back to your old not-giving-a-shit attitude and fandom will be a 1000 x more fun and less aggravating when you do.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't be so quick to assume shit like that. People can very easily watch a show that aired a long time ago on Netflix or just rent/buy it on DVD.

Yeah, I don't really like when someone wears merch for something they're completely unfamiliar with, but I give 'em the benefit of the doubt. Fifteen year olds were mere babies when the Sailor Moon anime came out, but it's not like it's that hard to watch it over the internet or something.

if anything you should be glad they're contributing to the incomes of the people who made those good shows by buying shirts and junk
