(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:01 am (UTC)(link)Anyway, basically I was saying that, yeah, there's a small, petty part of me that sneers when I see a fifteen year old wearing a She-Ra t-shirt, because all I can think is "you weren't even alive when that was on tv!" But the fact is that the current generation of teenagers has grown up with DVDs and the Internet always being there. Meaning they've had access to all sorts of things, and that includes tv shows no longer showing on television.
When I was born, VHS was still relatively new, but becoming more popular. Which meant I had access to a wide variety of Disney movies I could watch whenever I wanted when I was growing up. But for the generation before me, they didn't have that, they had to wait until the films were rereleased at the cinema. As technology evolves, it gives us wider access to more entertainment.
Then again, I wear my various cartoon graphic t-shirts with pride, and I've never really understood the point of wearing them 'ironically' or wearing something based on a show I've never seen, so what do I know?

It's really not important but I general silently facepalm to myself whenever I see people spouting off nonsense about this on Tumblr or Facebook.

If I want to wear a t-shirt with Top Cat on it's not to be edgy or hip, it's cause I freaking love that show.

And yes, I'm using an icon from an obscure 90s cartoon because it amuses me.

But alas, it's better to let it go. Even if their justification is no deeper than "the action looks cool" there's not reason they can't enjoy it also.

As for the the secret, I don't see a problem with it as long as they're not acting like smug little twits who are huge fans despite not knowing anything about it. Maybe they just thought the shirt looked cool? Or maybe they're just starting to get into the show/band and don't know too much deets about it yet.

Of course, I also don't quite understand the whole 90s fad and I was born in '96. I'd much rather be in the 60s, 70s, or 80s.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)How do you know the kid didn't watch it? Maybe they heard about it online and thought it sounded interesting and started watching it. Maybe their parents or older sibling introduced them to it. And if they haven't watched, why does it matter? Sometimes people just buy things because they think the design is cool and they don't care where it comes from.

you don't know anything about rebecca black okay you don't know whether she's seen teenage mutant ninja turtles. anyway people are going to wear what they like there's no point in complaining about it
i mean what a thing to be elitist about. teenage mutant ninja turtles, really. i hate this 90s worship in general, yuck.

Now wearing some merchandise from the show not knowing what it is, yeah that's kinda stupid.

anyway, it doesn't bother me, but i can understand how it can be a bit annoying to others :)

Yeah, I don't really like when someone wears merch for something they're completely unfamiliar with, but I give 'em the benefit of the doubt. Fifteen year olds were mere babies when the Sailor Moon anime came out, but it's not like it's that hard to watch it over the internet or something.

if anything you should be glad they're contributing to the incomes of the people who made those good shows by buying shirts and junk
