I feel the same way about teens who wear Nightmare Before Christmas clothing. I've told this story before, but once I saw a girl who had the same Jack Skellington bag as me, I said something like "You like that movie too?" and her response was "Oh? It's a movie?"

Ughhh.
ext_81845: mashmyre cello facepalming, from the anime zz gundam (facepalm)

LOL now that is annoying
Not to mention anyone could know that was a movie just by googling it, damn

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
that's so bizarre to me. i'd never buy something i'm not familiar with, because who knows what the images on the merchandise could represent? D:

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'm usually a bit wary of buying things like that, even if I like it purely for aesthetics. I just... I don't feel right wearing it if I'm not a fan but "hur hur, it looks cool". I like some of those little passport-looking wallets for Hetalia, for example, but I'm not going to buy one because I haven't really watched the show, and it reeks of just... wrongness to me.

[identity profile] orijinaru.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I see no point wearing or using something that's fandom-related when you're not part of said fandom. It just makes a person look like an assclown.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
That happened to me once when I was younger. I really liked this anime at the time and I met this older girl with a fandom hat on. I commented on it and she said she had no idea that it was related to anime because it was a present from her boyfriend and she hadn't personally picked it out. It was actually pretty embarrassing.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe for you. Who the hell cares if she knows where it's from? It's embarrassing that you care that much.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
that's really mean

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's dumb shits like you that put volumes of Urotsukidoji (NSFW at all) manga on shelves where any damn person can get it. Did I mention this happened in a comic shop in the middle of a mall? Yeah, that was fun trying to explain to the shopkeep why it didn't matter if someone ordered it and didn't pick it up, he probably shouldn't be selling it out in the open.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
the fuck are you talking about

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sorry, I'll dumb it down for you.

Commenting anon is stupid and girlfriend in story is stupid for putting something forward to the world as something they potentially endorse and/or have no problem with (girlfriend wearing it, shopkeep selling it) without knowing what the hell it is. It's the girlfriend's responsibility to make sure what she's wearing doesn't translate into "My boyfriend likes bukkake" (or fuck, maybe she wants to tell everyone, idgaf) and it's the shopkeep's responsibility to know what he's selling so he doesn't sell violent tentacle rape porn to a minor.

So, commenting anon (or maybe your?) assertion that the story-telling anon was stupid for thinking the girlfriend should know about the shit she's endorsing is actually the stupid assertion.

Hope that clarifies.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
no, I got most of that. I just thought it was really weird and random of you to say it. Like, one anon basically says "It's dumb to care so much about fandom" and then you're like "PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE THE REASON THAT CHILDREN GET SOLD TENTACLE PORN YOU HORRIBLE PERSON". I just thought it was funny and out of place is all. I mean, I could understand bringing it up if the conversation had even the slightest to do with minors looking at hentai, but...

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
lol this
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well I can understand if it was a present, it's not like she picked it out herself

[identity profile] wicked-seraph.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What

How could you not know that it's a movie? I legitimately cannot wrap my head around this. Plus, why the fuck would you buy merchandise for a series/movie/band/whatever that you know fuck-all about?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the style? Didn't know it was a movie and just thought it looked cool?

I have a Spider-man wallet myself and only have a few Spider-man comics. I just thought it looked cool and wanted that type of wallet. It was either Spider-man, Hello Kitty, or Nightmare before Christmas.

I guess though if anyone asked about it I could fake it pretty well.

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
How could she not know Jack Skellington is from a movie? Where has she been? LOL

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
this. it's played occasionally on at least two different channels throughout the year! surely she would vaguely know of it?
