I won't watch anything longer then three/four seasons.
Mostly because it encourages more interesting arc based progression and character development. You've got your story you want to tell and can properly plan it out. You don't really get that in a lot of American shows either which is a damn shame.
Hell just look at The Wire, easily the show I appreciate above all else from a craftsmanship perspective, and season five was a significant dip that started effecting my enjoyment of the rest - dumb I know, but damn it, recognise when to end your series jerks.

I really hate long series precisely because most of the time you know it's only for the money they keep doing more, and not because they have a story to tell. I think it would be best to end a series at its top quality than to let it drag on and ended being something mediocre.
