I think this pretty fair; this is what I did back in my anime/manga fandom days. Some of the shows just got to the point where they kept going on and on and were never going to end, that I just tended to prefer things that had its set beginning and end.

Although it gets kind of bittersweet, because I'd fall in love with an anime/manga (my icon, basically) and want more than what was given.

Is that icon from Emma?

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!!! It's my all time favorite anime/manga. <3 I love that series so much.

This is what's keeping me from reading One Piece and watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

[identity profile] rythen.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this way, too.
And yet somehow I sat down and watched through all of Dragonball/Z/GT.

I'm not sure I could do it again.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's why I stopped reading Naruto. And why I won't read One Piece. I'll pick them up when the series finally ends.

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Nice choice for the picture. Naruto is a series I'm almost giving up on just because I hate how there's such a lack of character development. That's why I adore Bleach. Not hatin. Just sayin. I kinda just check up on Naruto just because I want NaruSaku to happen. Can't lie.

But to the topic, that's not such a bad thing. Some of these series can take so long and then the end turns out to be something very unsatisfying.

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
This is true for me as well. I just can't watch the really long ones (and with manga I really have to like it). But my preference is more around the 25-30 episode mark. Hahah.

Oh Naruto I miss you, but you just wouldn't end.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I got into One Piece when I did, because I remember when it started getting into the 400s that I never would have bothered reading it if I saw it had that many chapters. That's also the reason I stopped reading Detective Conan. It was getting repetitive and I checked to see how far along I was and...I was like on ch. 120 out of 1500 chapters. Heh-yell no.

I like fandoms with closed canon because I want to know what I'm getting into.

Sup bro?

I won't watch anything longer then three/four seasons.

Mostly because it encourages more interesting arc based progression and character development. You've got your story you want to tell and can properly plan it out. You don't really get that in a lot of American shows either which is a damn shame.

Hell just look at The Wire, easily the show I appreciate above all else from a craftsmanship perspective, and season five was a significant dip that started effecting my enjoyment of the rest - dumb I know, but damn it, recognise when to end your series jerks.

[identity profile] imati-lau.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
This, so much.

I really hate long series precisely because most of the time you know it's only for the money they keep doing more, and not because they have a story to tell. I think it would be best to end a series at its top quality than to let it drag on and ended being something mediocre.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
well, i do the same. not out of a fear of commitment, though. i think it's mostly that most really long shows are shounen, and i just can't stand most shounen.

(i would watch the fuck out of a billion seasons of kaichou wa maid sama or nichijou but it ain't gonna happen.)

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to stick to 13 or 26 episode ones usually. Some of that is the deficiencies of my attention span, and some of it is that longer anime (or shows in general) that remain open-ended for years tend to fall apart eventually.

(Not speaking of Naruto; I don't watch it.)

[identity profile] avalon-usagi.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Which, appropriate to your icon, is why Yoshitoshi ABe animes are so great.

In Naruto's case, don't feel bad OP. The series is still going and hasn't gotten any better; it's only gotten worse.

But I think it's entirely understandable why you don't want to commit to long series, particularly when the series are excruciatingly long shounen ones. I mean I loved the original YuGiOh! but part of that is because it didn't drag on forever.

Yeah 11-20some eps for me only! I'll only do two-season stuff if I REALLY like it. (other than anpanman guilty pleasure always)

I just like concise, put-together stories! I'm not interested in having my fave characters stick around forever, I just want a good story.

[identity profile] orijinaru.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way, OP.

ya know, I hear that.

[identity profile] errantnarwhal.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
lol I'm with you. I think it's more because I have a really short attention span though. Earlier I was looking at an anime and I was like "Oh this looks all right, but jeez, it's an entire twenty five episodes. I don't know about this".

[identity profile] riverfleur.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Good choice to use Naruto for this. That series seems to have emotionally involved lots of fans and dragged them through a bunch of shit that doesn't matter and never get to what it is we're waiting for... or at least what seems to be the only thing Kishi is building up (Naruto vs. Sasuke). He's already abandoned most of the characters or completely ruining those that do get focus.

Long time fans were lured in by part one, which was fairly consistent and seemed like it was planned out. Now we have a tedious mess that is just being dragged out way longer than it should have been.

Sorry for going off on my own tangent but I use to be sooo into Naruto and now it just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I'm part of the camp that believes the whole 'saving Sasuke' thing should have been an arc or two at most... not the whole freaking story. Now Kishi has built-up so much anticipation he'll never live up to the hype. Not to mention I don't think there are many who can truly sympathize with Naruto's wish to save Sasuke as Sasuke has turned into one of the most detestable and one-dimensional characters I have ever seen, and the stories hero is a complete doormat for him.

TL;DR- Being a spurned Naruto fan I agree with you OP. I know I'm not alone when I say I just want it to end already.

[identity profile] royalbk.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
While I am a Naruto lover still - especially with the latest nine tail redemption thing going on in the manga which I really love - I can never miss the occasion of dissing Sasuke.

What started as a likable character turned into the most can-I-stab-him-now-times-infinity character I have ever seen. And usually I'm never invested in hating characters, preferring to just fawn over my favorites...so this is saying a lot.

*pats back* Don't be sad anon. Just enjoy the insanity, the humor and the nonsense currently going on. Without strings or attachments. there's always fanfiction to redeem what you hate in the show! <3

Me too.

Really, the longer an anime is, the more likely it is to have a bunch of filler and crappy episodes in it. Shorter series tend to be tighter, plotwise (although there's exceptions of course).
