I haven't seen so much of that, but I will say the fact that Sherlock is actually PERFECTLY HAPPY the way he is (and not in a the-lady-doth-prpotest-too-much kind of way) and has no interest in changing seems to have passed an alarming number of "fans" by.

In the bulk of fanfic I've read for the series it's like House has ditched his cane, died his hair and put on an English accent.

you do know that House is based on the original Sherlock Holmes too, right? But yeah I agree, this Sherlock is pretty pleased with himself.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm well aware - it was the only reason I stuck with the show as long as I did. But House is still a very different character in his own right and treating him and Sherlock as though they're interchangeable is just stupid. It's like all those portrayals of Watson which look no further than Watson from the Basil Rathbone films.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. Most fic I've read tend to keep Sherlock just as he is. Often it's the point of the fic. But I don't read everything out there. (And stay away from ff.net as a rule.)

[identity profile] vivi314.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
is it really...that bad? i mean sure, fandom has a tendency to woobify sherlock in fic and there's a lot of focus on him because uuuh he's the main character?
i don't know, i've seen a lot of these comments on the kink meme's rant post and have yet to see a big example of Sherlock!whump taking precedence over everything 8|a NOT DOUBTING WHAT YOU'RE SAYING just...wondering

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
When I first heard this type of rant, I remember thinking that the person obviously hadn't read enough fic. the more Inreqd though, the more I found myself agreeing. It happens mostly where it's John the one that is the "focus" of the fic. Lestrade/Mycroft not so much. But John? The poor man could have a knife sticking out of his chest and the fic focuses on how Sherlock is the one really suffering because he has to see the knife sticking out of Johns chest, won't sleep or eat until the knife is out of Johns chest and will have PTSD because of the scar left by the knife in Johns chest.

[identity profile] vivi314.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, really? :( Looks like I've been really lucky in my fic-reading experiences.

Anyhow, that sucks, I understand why one would be annoyed by that if it's the case of John whump being all about Sherlock.

Thank you for making me laugh. Great comment.

/off topic

I'm not gonna lie, that font you chose was driving me crazy while I was trying to read your secret.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH AN i THAT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE AN l, FONT?

[identity profile] captainprowler.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Haha came here to basically say this. I think maybe the text was distorted/shrunk so that the dot at the top of the i connects to the bottom to make it look like a l? Either way its super distracting.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
O_o. I don't read woobie Sherlock fic. I don't write woobie Sherlock fic... and yet somehow I have plenty to read in this fandom.

How about instead of requesting something be "against sherlock!whump" to rather be about what you really want to read instead. I mean, I don't know how to write an anti-Sherlock!whump fic, but I do know how to how to whump the beejesus out of John.

[identity profile] to-question.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Just popping in to heap love on your John whumping fics.

*heaps love*

[identity profile] yeah-i-be-crazy.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've requested john h/c fic where it's john-centric and I agree that it almost always ends up at some point being all about sherlocks paaaiiinn. Sherlock freaks out, or has a minor injury and blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda. Irritating as heck.

However I don't find this with other pairings. It's not like say, a lestrade/mycroft h/c and sherlock swoops in with tears of agony streaming down his cheeks.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's because a lot of fans can't see Sherlock in a caretaker role being that he barely cares enough to caretake himself. Personally, I think this is selling Sherlock a bit short. I think he's perfectly capable of taking care of people -- if he wanted to, he's just not had much reason to want to in the past. He in fact does take care of people in a certain way -- he solves their crimes for them with a righteous wrath even. He just isn't so much into the cuddling their feelings and waiting on them hand and foot the way a lot of those into the c side of h/c crave.

If you requested John h/c with Mycroft, or Lestrade, Sarah or Molly as the caretaker, someone might take you up on it. Or if you were just into John whump where John takes care of himself afterwards. I love me some John whump, but I see the c side afterwards as being very understated, and more a matter of giving John a good distraction. But like you, I'm really not into that distraction being "Sherlock turning into a puddle of unjustified angst," because damn it, one-upping someone's pain is as annoying as fuck.

[identity profile] turkfox.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
It bugs me a lot. I'd write some non-woobie Sherlock more often (I already do in the stories I've written or am currently writing) but half the prompts are Sherlock/John (I don't ship or write it) and I can't be bothered to search for more, though I do have an idea for a non-woobie Sherlock-centric story that I may try out.

IDK, I just think he's a lot tougher than some people make him out to be.

.......

I............must be lucky, cause I keep NOT running into that at all. I can't give you a huge and comprehensive recs list, cause I'm still stupidly new to this fandom, but get ye to [livejournal.com profile] libraryofsol and read the fuck out of the Sherlock fics there. Oh, and this (http://archiveofourown.org/works/120495), which is a crossover I just found yesterday and it's not even shippy BUT IT'S LOVELY AND EVERYONE SHOULD READ IT =)

also, sorry: 5 FUCKING DAYS TIL S2, 5 DAYS!!!!!!!OMG

This fic reminds me that I have at least two John Watson misery fics – with him as the viewpoint character and the focus on him – that I want to write. So many fics to write right now... so little time... *flails like a fish out of water*

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Where's all this Sherlock whump you speak of? I'd actually like to see some of that.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Go to the Sherlockbbc_fic meme. Blink...and you won't miss a aherlock!whump prompt/fill.

Have at it!

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this fandom is pretty Sherlock-focused, probably because it's always fun to play with the traditional stoic character who really feels things inside. Just look at Spock or...some other character I'm not thinking of right now.

Fandom is never going to change its preferences based on you ranting, secreting or even begging for it. Best option is to lower your expectations or keep trying prompts on the kink meme. Like someone else mentioned, the best thing is to give specific things you'd like to see rather than "I DO NOT WANT THIS." People tend to ignore negativity.

But getting angry about it and mocking people just for things you don't like will not get you the fic you're looking for. Trust me.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think OP knows this, thus the reason for posting it here. If fandom was going to be affected based on secrets, it would change dramatically nearly every second of every day.

Also, on reading this secret I didn't think "goes against sherlock!whump" meant they were demanding on their prompt that no said whumpage be made. I think they just meant that they request something beside sherlock!whump. The I'm on the meme constantly and never have I seen a prompt where someone says "no sherlock!whump"

If you take a look at any single page on the meme almost 1/3s of it is in someway sherlock!whump related. Wobbie!Sherlock is also rather popular. It's been ranted on the meme before-as OP said-and it creates wank, yells of Second! and everything else.

If I was someone who hated sherlock!whump I could see myself considering leaving.

Thank You

I dived into the sherlockbbc fanfiction with high expectations of the variety offered. I Jumped in and smacked my head an inch later.

It's so amazing how much is Sherlock!Whump, Wobbie!Sherlock, Crisis!Sherlock. I was so hoping for a diversified meme considering the show. The people are diverse.

It's just. So. Repetitive. It is so exasperating to find a fill for a prompt where someone requests someone else be hurt and three out of four times the injured party is left languishing while Sherlock thinks about doing drugs, has an Oscar winning angst and wastes away soneveryone worries about him. Screw the man who's bleeding in the corner.

(Fully expecting the rant post to have someone throw a hand over their forhead and say something to the effect of "Fic!shaming" "OMG how dare you say something negative about the glorious, glittery fiction here? Just scroll the *uck by!")

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it too, OP. After four or so months of being in fandom I left because I felt like I was reading the same few fics over and over again. I've just recently come back because the impending start of the second series has renewed my interest. Sadly it doesn't seem the meme has changed much, but I know there's still good fic to find! velvet_mace always has wonderful fic though, if John being the hurt one is more your thing?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I left too, except for the rant meme check which is amusing as hell. Someone is already wringing their hands over this secret. I'm afraid to interact.
