I go for the throat?
Well I'm sick of ignorance in the Doctor who fandom people will say: 'The Doctor would NEVER do that!' when he has a dozen times just not in the new series.
People have this idea that he knows all, at one point he didn't. At one point he just ended up places and people died, a lot of the time the very people he was trying to save all of them.
No one should assume with the Doctor what he did and didn't do in the name of good (sometime not good just 'get me out of here') varies from era to era. And no one should flat out say the Doctor would never unless it's something really sexual because that never happens on screen. But all sorts of other violent, cruel and underhanded things? He may have done them. He's no saint. There is a reason everything in the universe is afraid of him.
And I'm sorry I turned you off watching classic who, very sorry.
I said I was sorry over and over again. I feel bad for people who don't have the time or money to watch it and don't want to download it.I just don't get people who don't see the wonderful, that's all.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-27 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)It's nice that you want to share your love of fandom with people. What isn't nice is that you've declared yourself as holder of the Arbitary Measuring Stick Of Fandom. You don't get to tell people how they should enjoy canon, what they should do to prove they know canon, and that they can't have an opinion unless they've gone through your checklist of how to enjoy canon. People can develop an opinion of a character from one episode. If they watch more episodes, maybe that opinion will change. Maybe more episodes will only re-enforce their opinion. But they are still entitled to that opinion, their opinion is not 'wrong', and they are allowed to express that opinion within fandom. I think you'd find fandom a lot more enjoyable if you stopped trying to police how other people participate. That is not your right.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-28 10:09 am (UTC)(link)THIS is where you fuck up. You do NOT get to decide if a person's likes or dislikes are wrong, just because they do not match up. The previous anon had it perfectly right: you require people to meet your expectations, and if they don't you're like a bulldog.
I mean, THIS bullshit:
Anon: their opinion is not 'wrong'
You: Can I still laugh at them somewhere if it's wrong?
That's the shit people are sick of you pulling.

Or: " was the LOVE of the Doctor's life!"
Another time when it even even the producers of the show are on my side, I can't laugh then?
I mean if someone thinks something and every other fan who knows the facts knows they it is silly or ignorant, then why is laughing and gently correcting bad?

But that's not true the Doctor did horrible things to his enemies all the time in the Classic show! Hell to Ace who his friend.
Ummm The thing is, I was bopping along minding my business in November trying, really trying to be civil and polite defending Neil Gaiman in a thread ( Neil Gaiman thread) when all of sudden all these anons popped up calling me nasty names. For something that happened in AUGUST! It lasted for Four days, they even posted LINKS! Four days over a unrelated fandom thing four months ago well damn! Look it dregged everything up again, I am waiting any day now some of you anons to start making horrid call or sending me nasty letters.
Four days for something Four months ago. And at the time I was kinda out of the Who fandom, more into Withnail & I and my own novel.
It really hurt and depressed me. And it kept happening even when said something harmless on a FF!S thread like: 'I like mittens too!'
I don't know... I just went as mad as they painted me.
Also someone posting about the Doctor wouldn't kill with his hands in this post or yesterday and me going... "Uhhhh... no....Not my favorite Doctor, he did."

The HBO war fandom, so Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Generation Kill - all true stories told by actors, which people don't realise. We've had all sorts of things recently, eg. "omg why did McAvoy's character die? screw you, writers!" and we had to explain nicely that actually, Private James Miller really did die in Holland.
If you get your words and tone right, they take it well and understand, because most of the time they genuinely didn't know it was about real people or that they would be seen as disrespectful. It's only if you get the explanation wrong (even just a slightly-off tone would do it) that you upset people.
I understand what it's like to be so passionate about your subject when you know so much about it and others don't, but it's just a case of finding exactly the right way of putting things so you show people that while they may not have all the knowledge yet, they can learn and that you and others can help, and you're not angry that they didn't know.
