I did this for years. then someone told me it would get easier if I just started joining in discussions about things that I'm interested in, so I did.

now I'm an F!S regular, and I still have no fandom friends. the moral of this story: I have no idea.

[identity profile] making-excuses.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
So did I, so did I.

Trying to at least post regularly on F!S, but the internet scares me (I dunno why, it's not like anyone knows who I am...)

Wanna be my fandom friend? ¨

Edit: I just realized to actually be fandom friends one have to have fandoms in common... (Which I dunno if we have? But I watch way too many shows...)

aww, that's sweet of you. :)

I watch an awful amount of TV, too, so we probably have something in common (well, besides F!S). I'll friend ya.

[identity profile] making-excuses.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
And I friended you back.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, along with the interet fear. I mean, when I do try to make friends people are really nice to me so I don't know what I'm scared of, but the idea of ever becoming close enough friends with someone on the internet that I can comfortable greet them with "HAAAAYYY GURL" doesn't seem like it's something that's ever going to happen to me because I'm just really socially awkward and feel like whatever I do comes off as creepy. Also, my best RL friend is into fandom, so I just talk about fandom stuff with her.

But anyway, we both like Harry Potter and himym, so.... wanna be friends? (I realize that writing a paragraph about how awkward you are and then asking to be friends is comnpletely counterproductive, but eh :P)

[identity profile] making-excuses.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm basically just scared of insulting people, which I'm weirdly not that scared of in real life, most of the time I am a bitch in RL and really nice online... Should probably switch that around...

Ohh another HP and HIMYM fan, sure, I'll friend you. (my blog is kinda insane though, but I promise I'm not some kind of scary murderous person, I just ramble.)

You like Spn and Sherlock and I think you're pretty cool. Would you mind if I friend you?

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
go right ahead! I've never read or seen Sherlock, so that's a little odd, but Supernatural I most definitely love.

We don't have any fandoms in common (yet?) but it's nice to see someone who also admittedly has no idea. I'll add you here. Though if you have AIM and use it, definitely hit me up.

RL friends? The wall? His/her blog? Cat? The list goes on...

I used to have no fandom friends. The way I seem to have remedied it was that if I found a fic that I'd been following for a while, I'd start leaving nice comments. Not in an attempt to make friends, but because I am so terrible at leaving comments, and have a tendency to get overexcited, if there was a fic that I loved enough that I left a comment, it would usually be quite long and involved and gushing. And then the author would reply, thanking me for leaving such a nice comment. And that would make me feel good, because I'd made someone happy. So I would start reviewing like that regularly. And the next thing you know, you've got a new friend.

On the other hand, if you're more of a prolific fic writer than I am, then you can try responding more to any of your regular reviewers. Because you already know you have something in common; you both like the same fic!

I guess it's all about not actively setting out to make friends when you first start communicating with people, which isn't really all that helpful, I suppose.

tl;dr I ramble a lot, but come up with very few actual helpful suggestions.

Haha, when I read the first sentence, I thought you'd continue with "...and then I took an arrow in the knee" XD

But yeah, good advice. Making people feel good is a nice way to make friends. While I haven't made any fandom friends that way yet, I've started nice conversation with fanfic authors.

[identity profile] alice-alaizabel.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm wishing I did now.

Come to think of it, I also podfic, so the three authors I'm currently very good friends with are all people whose (massively long) fics I've taken on as projects.

I feel like this is exactly what I've become.

[identity profile] tamabonotchi.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I do too!

[identity profile] naevai.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I do this because I get anxious when posting online for some reason.

But I have made one of my best fandom friends ever, by pointing out a problem with her fic in a (otherwise positive) comment and we have been bouncing conversation around since. :3
