But it wasn't sexual, and possibly a never-quite-actualized romantic love until he had become human. Besides, if my dog could talk and think like a human being, I'm pretty sure I'd love him more than any man.

Yeah. You can have a crush on someone and not want them sexually. Love is a pretty complex thing as it were.

Your dog would be a big asshole, would only talk using memes and would make bad jokes.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
That dog sounds hilarious, actually.

You know, I think that she just loved him as a person, not really romantically, until he turned human again. Or maybe she was a furry. Who knows?

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Belle as a furry makes me giggle for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a fic once where Belle had sex with her horse

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I"m not surprised at all. Though the horse isn't anthro so I don't think that counts.

Same here. As a kid, I always thought it was weird.

Well, he is human, he just doesn't look like one. He can talk and he acts like a human.

But yeah, that'd be weird, I wouldn't have loved him in a romantic or sexual sense. Of course I'd have no pity on anyone who thought it was okay to toss my sick father in a jail cell and then hold me prisoner in his place. /can't relate

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't think it was 'okay'. He let her father go and then eventually let her go as well.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Eventually
I'm sure you can spot the problem there.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
But didn't she like, know he was originally a human? And I'm guessing she wasn't trying to fall in love consciously... You can't help who you fall in love with. I always thought she realizes her affections for Beast are actually that of love only towards the end when he gets stabbed. More like... she knew she loved the Beast, but she didn't know she was in love with him.

And like many asexuals (and non-asexuals alike) can tell you, you can love someone romantically without it being sexual.

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think the point was to love another. Perhaps not fall in love, but to simply love.

[identity profile] raykat.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
What I came here to say. The terms of the curse were simply: "If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return", which makes sense since the enchantress "had seen that there was no love in his heart" of any kind, not just romantic.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was a strange, but since that was right around the time the animated TV show "Gargoyles" was out, I focused all my 'she's in love with someone who isn't human? that's so wierd!' energy on that show instead of "Beauty and the Beast."

(And now I've fallen into Bioware's Mass Effect where humans-aliens in the norm. How things change.)

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
But that voice, tho. Yes, that is actually my logic.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. I can understand loving him as a friend/companion, but not the romantic love the movie portrayed. My romantic/sexual interests are limited to human beings...

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
The movie I think did a good job at developing their love story in a non-creepy way (YMMY), but the merchandise can be creepy as hell. I was flipping through some of the Disney coloring/activity books we sell at the store where I work, and they always portray Belle and Beast as a mushy couple. Why not use his human form more in the merch?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-31 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way. I would probably love him, but not fall IN love with him. I couldn't see myself being attracted on any level to another species. It doesn't compute in my brain. I will love animals, but never be in love with them. Even if they talked to me and wine and dined me. But then, I think Belle found out he used to be human before she really fell in love with him, rather than just felt for him. That's a game changer. It's all very confusing hahaha
