I hope this is a "I feel empathy for the Japanese peope" secret, and not a "nooo! Not my magical superior anime land!" secret.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
WTF in this secret gave any indication that it was the latter? >__>

Oh, FS, y u always assume the worst?

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
In this case I don't think it's an example of placing anime love over the actual disaster. But a few months ago there were quite a few secrets like that.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw some secrets like that. But all those secrets had a ton of comments from people saying they were upset because they had loved ones there or that they were donating to help the people, so I don't think there's any reason to assume that someone who is upset about the tsunamis is upset for trivial reasons.

OP here!

It is, trust me...if it came off any other way, it's completely unintentional :/

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Same for me - I didn't see Ponyo until after the tsunami and those scenes were really hard to watch. :/

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it before the tsunami but having lived through a different type of natural disaster, I too found it very hard to see the charm in it.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I watched it, not for the first time, about a month after the tsunami (having forgotten about that scene) and found it very hard to watch. Which was unfortunate because I was watching it in the first place because my anxiety was acting up and I wanted to watch something soothing. Oops.

If you haven't seen it, I find Kiki's Delivery Service extremely soothing. It was one of the only movies my daughter could watch when she was little and afraid of everything.

(Not to jump in, but I guess it's almost relevant...)

Don't worry, anon. Ever since 2005 I've had a hard time with tsunami related things, so that scene freaked me out a tad, too.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
That tsunami was shit-your-pants scary even from thousands of miles away. Watching that scene gives me shudders, too, because it's fucking scary. I mean it's cool that in the show that everyone seemed to be able to breathe underwater or find a boat, and it wasn't realistic about the debris, but drowning is still one of those primal fears.

[identity profile] chibifier.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, then you missed the best scene in the whole movie. Brunhilde the Valkyrie.
Go watch it again. The japanese won't be mad at you.

[identity profile] kayfig.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's interesting, I always think of the earthquake when I think of Japan, though the tsunami that followed obviously caused severe damage. I had a friend who was living abroad during the earthquake who directly experienced the earthquake aspect so that's all I really think of.

For someone who's been through those things I can see why it might be traumatic to watch it again (or something similar to it), in a fictional format but I don't think I would affected by it as much or at all. Then again, I haven't seen it since the earthquake so who knows.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Even a lot of people who weren't there when it happened probably experienced a lot of stress from it. I was stressed because I did homestay there (even though it was nowhere near the tsunami and no one in the area I stayed in died) and at first I was worried about my host family, then I found out they were okay but I was stressed because my teacher had family there and she was worried about them, and even when it was confirmed that everyone was okay there was still the nuclear power plant scare that could have been really, REALLY bad, and caused radiation poisoning in the rescue workers who went to stop it. :( So, yeah, that part of Ponyo was hard to watch because it reminded me of all that worry and all that had happened. And I can only imagine how much harder it would be for someone who lost loved ones there.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I think of, too. We literally just got a letter from my mom's old friend in Japan telling us that she's okay. We didn't hear from her for a year and have been thinking she might have been killed since the earthquake was in her area. Thankfully her and her family are alright.
