I thought Hugo was supremely boring and not a well constructed movie. And I hated War Horse. I don't get how these two movies are getting awards buzz.

I have yet to see Hugo (which is kind of sad), but maybe it gets a lot of awards buzz because it's largely a tribute to classic cinema? As a film student seeing that there was an animated movie focusing on Melies got me really excited. And reviewers are usually the type of people who would appreciate such a subject.

Idk, just thoughts.

Idk. I think the fact that I actually AM familiar with Melies and all that made it less interesting to me, I think. Because part of the dramatic tension comes from the fact that the kids haven't figured out who Melies is, and I was like just like "Ugh. How dumb are you kids?". And then I felt like the movie was trying to be about classic cinema, but also trying to be about family and love, but also trying to be about nostalgia for bygone times and it was just all over the place.

The Artist was a better tribute to silent films, imo.

Hm, that's kind of interesting. Maybe it's just the fact that it's actually trying to make classic cinema accessible to younger kids? Idk, I'm wondering if the fact that it's just trying is enough to make reviewers like it automatically.

Ahh, I want to see The Artist so much. It looks really good.

The Artist was REALLY good. It's probably in my top 10 movies of the year. Definitely try to see it if you can!

Haven't seen Hugo (no desire to, really) but I liked War Horse. It wasn't a particularly compelling story (for me, it was pretty obvious the source material was a children's story) nor did it have very good characters, but the cinematography was so beautiful that I was never bored. I don't think it should win awards for acting and such, but I'd love to see it get a nod for cinematography.

Wow, really? Because I just saw War Horse, and both it and Hugo got me pretty emotional. :(

I suspect it's just a matter of tastes, maybe. Also, I didn't know all the stuff that Hugo taught about film, so for me it was educational and made me want to learn more.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I just felt like War Horse was too obvious and was trying too hard to make the audience feel things. Like it was all "HERE IS SOME SWELLING MUSIC AND DRAMATIC LIGHTING AND A HORSE BREAKING HARD. FEEL THINGS. FEEEEL THEM." I found it too over the top and dramatic. Idk. I guess I was clearly not the audience for the movie.

I'm not an ~expert~ on cinema history. I only took an undergrad class on the history of film, but Melies is a pretty central figure for anyone who knows much about the history of movie making, so yeah. Idk. It wasn't new or surprising to me. It was just like "well, yes...".

I just felt like War Horse was too obvious and was trying too hard to make the audience feel things.

IOW, like pretty much every Spielberg movie ever?

"HERE IS SOME SWELLING MUSIC AND DRAMATIC LIGHTING AND A HORSE BREAKING HARD. FEEL THINGS. FEEEEL THEM."
This made me laugh really hard because that's EXACTLY the kind of thing I always fall for in movies/books/tv. It doesn't matter how corny it is, I'm a complete sucker for that kind of thing; it's really embarrassing :P I kind of want to see it now, just so I can FEEEEL ALL OF THE THINGS.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And I disliked The Artist and The Help. Different people like different things, why is this surprising, and why are you bitching in the comments of a squee post?
