I thought Hugo was supremely boring and not a well constructed movie. And I hated War Horse. I don't get how these two movies are getting awards buzz.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I have yet to see Hugo (which is kind of sad), but maybe it gets a lot of awards buzz because it's largely a tribute to classic cinema? As a film student seeing that there was an animated movie focusing on Melies got me really excited. And reviewers are usually the type of people who would appreciate such a subject.

Idk, just thoughts.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk. I think the fact that I actually AM familiar with Melies and all that made it less interesting to me, I think. Because part of the dramatic tension comes from the fact that the kids haven't figured out who Melies is, and I was like just like "Ugh. How dumb are you kids?". And then I felt like the movie was trying to be about classic cinema, but also trying to be about family and love, but also trying to be about nostalgia for bygone times and it was just all over the place.

The Artist was a better tribute to silent films, imo.

Haven't seen Hugo (no desire to, really) but I liked War Horse. It wasn't a particularly compelling story (for me, it was pretty obvious the source material was a children's story) nor did it have very good characters, but the cinematography was so beautiful that I was never bored. I don't think it should win awards for acting and such, but I'd love to see it get a nod for cinematography.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, really? Because I just saw War Horse, and both it and Hugo got me pretty emotional. :(

I suspect it's just a matter of tastes, maybe. Also, I didn't know all the stuff that Hugo taught about film, so for me it was educational and made me want to learn more.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I just felt like War Horse was too obvious and was trying too hard to make the audience feel things. Like it was all "HERE IS SOME SWELLING MUSIC AND DRAMATIC LIGHTING AND A HORSE BREAKING HARD. FEEL THINGS. FEEEEL THEM." I found it too over the top and dramatic. Idk. I guess I was clearly not the audience for the movie.

I'm not an ~expert~ on cinema history. I only took an undergrad class on the history of film, but Melies is a pretty central figure for anyone who knows much about the history of movie making, so yeah. Idk. It wasn't new or surprising to me. It was just like "well, yes...".

And I disliked The Artist and The Help. Different people like different things, why is this surprising, and why are you bitching in the comments of a squee post?

I didn't cry at either beginnings but I definitely was moved but the cinematic visuals we were given. Completely in awe, especially with Hugo. That movie was just a breath of fresh air this past year.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a feeling you are hanging around too many emotional or very sensitive people.

That must suck.

[identity profile] hellissohotrn.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
wow, i just started crying because of the trailer. i feel you, man.

[identity profile] chaosmyth.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I did too :x

[identity profile] nombrehetomado.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Exactly this.

[identity profile] haikitteh.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I cried almost all the way through Wall-E. I thought that was the saddest dystopian/apocalyptic world I'd ever seen, maybe because it feels like it could so easily come true. Or because the world evolved out of greed and selfishness, I don't know.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. Everyone said they cried during Up!, but... I didn't at all, it was a comedy?

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
what about the opening scene
um, that's not really comedy
and it's not like comedies can't have sad bits or be emotional

Aww, yeah, that was great. Have you read the book? I recommend it so hard. (And Wonderstruck, the author's second book. I NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THIS OKAY)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

I bought the book and it was supposed to ship just after Christmas, but it hasn't come! I need it! I've been seeing Wonderstruck everywhere though, and fully intend to read it as well.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I need to remember to borrow this when it hits DVD. I don't think I'm going to make it to the theater and I've heard good things from a friend.

...Of course, that friend also REALLY HATED WALL-E, and this secret reminded me of that, so maybe I should be getting a second opinion before assuming I'll like the film because one friend did. %D;;;

Hey FS! Have at me! Convince me to see this movie please! :D

I feel like the less you know about Hugo going in, the more fun it is. I went in knowing absolutely nothing, and it was just like the books I loved as a kid- there's tons of fun little characters, everything looks gorgeous, and it's all cozy and sweet. Also, the music is fucking gorgeous.

i feel ya, it was stunningly beautiful!

[identity profile] castorochiaro.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
People cried at the first 10 minutes of WALL-E? I thought it was Up most people cried at...

In any case, both Wall-E and Hugo are very visual, beautiful movies. I wasn't HUGELY affected by Hugo, but God the sheer LOOK of the film was absolutely captivating.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree. It least with Up there was a reason to cry but as for Wall-E what is there to cry about? He's working, and has a cricket-thingy friend to keep him company.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Hugo yet and from the moment I saw the trailer awhile back I wasn't interested. I get the raves by critics and it visually looks like it could be beautiful. I can see the nods to cinematography in the trailer, but it gives me this sinking feeling it's an "art film." Not that they're bad, but they are not my cup of tea at all. I appreciate what they bring to film, but I don't personally want to sit through it. Plus the story doesn't interest me. That being said, I will probably be dragged to see it at some point given all the buzz it's getting and having hipster friends haha

I also didn't think Wall-E was as great as people made it out to be either. I liked it and it had some really cute moments, but I don't think it was overly fantastic as everyone (by that I mean critics) said it was. It was good.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Crying at the beauty of the first ten minutes of Wall-E.

I mean, Wall-E does have some really beautiful moments, but the first ten minutes are while he's still on earth, which is barren and covered in trash.

Maybe you mean crying in the first ten minutes because it's so fucking depressing it makes you want to kill yourself?
