Re-releases make me mad some times. I've spent loads on the first Utena boxsets and nearly purchased the first sailor moon english mangas on ebay for just as much. In the 90s, I had no idea what manga was, thought it was the SAME story so I figured I'd just watch it on USA network and be lazy. Meanwhile saving pics of the Outers via AOL because I didn't know who they were. :/

tldr, I feel like I wasted my money but I always justify it by saying "But what if it never gets re-re;eased/signature series? I have to buy it now before it goes out of print!" Looking at you Sailor Moon box sets.

While I can kind of understand what you mean...that's no reason to be MAD that a series is being re-released. The re-release of Utena has the best picture I've EVER seen for this series, and the amazingly detailed booklets that were published with each set are a wealth of information on the making of the series. Plus, younger anime fans will now be exposed to the series, breathing some new life into the fandom. I love that!

Back in the day, ALL anime box sets were expensive...before DVDs came out, entire sets of VHS tapes for one season of say, Ranma 1/2 for example, was almost $300. Technology's gonna advance, we're gonna get media being released and re-released in different formats. Hell, I still have old LDs and VHS tapes of older stuff.
But I'm GLAD that the prices are cheaper now. It saves me money and space! And I never feel bad for buying expensive sets in the past because 1. I was supporting a series I loved and 2. I was supporting the anime industry in America. (It's kinda funny to me now to see series I bought years ago now on 2 discs for like $20, though.)

I have all the SM manga, and all the DVDs (literally... complete dub, SMS thinpack + individual DVDs, SMSS thinpack + individual DVDs, SM sub, SMR sub, Movie boxset ALL FIRST PRINT + bootleg of specials & Stars).

AND I LOVE THE RE-RELEASES.

I bought all of them in the past year, except some manga, SM sub, and Movie boxset.

Oh, I have the individual comics too. I got all but 2 during release.

Don't re-releases usually improve visuals of the anime in question?

While I can't stand Utena (the show in general) for the ambigous, immoral insanity going on in it, I don't think they can improve the visuals on it...

...unless they suddenly redesign it to look like the OVA version. not possible but heart be still - THE PRETTY!

They re-colored lots of cells and converted it to HD, which is pretty much all they could do. (And they put in 5.1 stereo.) I thought it looked LOTS better than the original CPM release. Unfortunately, the line art isn't always spectacular, but that's what 90s anime was like, especially shows done on a small budget. (Look at the early seasons of Sailor Moon ... )

And there was never an Utena OVA -- you mean, the movie? Like I said, the colors are better and the images sharper, but the show could never be the movie in terms of consistently amazing art quality.

But I mean, honestly, who cares about the art, when you get right down to it? It's all about the actual story.

The Sailor Moon manga is being re-released? Can someone tell me if they're using the original Japanese names this time? And if they're still calling the silver crystal by three different names that they keep changing? And if they keep the Japanese jokes in (Miss Rain to Demi Moore, I remember)? Basically, same translation as last time, or accurate?

I agree entirely, Anon! I am even willing to admit that I cried tears of happiness when I finally got my copies of Sailor Moon and Sailor V volume 1 in my hands. It was like Kodansha gave me back the best part of my childhood.

Yeah I was super excited that they've re-released BSSM and Sailor V. Fortunately I already purchased the re-release Japanese set so...I don't want to rebuy it, but I'm glad they've made the translations better and from what I remember they kept everyone's Japanese names right?

I didn't know Utena was released again on DVD. I'll have to check it out. =D

I was jumping up and down for months after hearing Sailor Moon was getting re-released. Some series are considered legendary out of nostalgia, and some series are considered legendary because that's what they are...

I'm with you on the hoping for a full Sailor Moon DVD re-release too. Maybe someday.

I'm really happy about the Sailor Moon re-release. I didn't even know about the manga until way late, and only have a few of the books, most of which are Stars in its entirety.

So I get to read / buy them all from the beginning, fill in the holes I missed, and have something that is both accurate to the source Japanese material and have the pages facing the right way (instead of mirrored, like the Tokyopop books). Also, all new merchandise!
Now if they'd only remake the anime to be accurate to the manga. But I already know that'll never happen, unfortunately.
