To be honest, I like 'em too. I know they don't really fit and theirs is the worst song, but the rest of the film is just so intense that it's nice to have a break.

First off, your icon is hiliarious. XD

Secondly... I kind of agree with you re the film needing a break, because it is intense, I just wish they'd done it better. The Lion King is pretty intense too but Timon and Pumbaa work. I think maybe if they'd made it more explict that the gargoyles were imaginary friends and cut down on the pop-culture-y parts they wouldn't be nearly so hated.

[identity profile] emeriin.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I definitely agree. That's why I think "A Guy Like You" is the worst song (let's face it, it has a lot of competition), I know they tried to go back to the imaginary friends theory right after but there's no way Quasimodo would have known all those pop-culture jokes. It just seemed like trying to cash in on the Genie/Aladdin formula.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel kind of bad for 'A Guy Like You', because it's honestly not that bad - it's pretty fun in isolation but in context... yeah, no. Also I am 99% sure you are correct about the Genie formula. (Damn it, early nineties film makers, the Genie only worked because Robin Williams is enough of a bamf to make him work! Stop trying to shoe-horn 20th century pop culture into films where it makes no sense!)

My other pet theory is that Notre Dame is sapient and they are extensions of its concious created to keep Quasimodo company, which makes slightly more sense with the pop culture stuff, because a sapient cathedral can do what it damn well pleases.

I fully agree about both A Guy Like You and the gargoyles in general. They really did give the movie some lighter moments that it needed, but there is such a clash in the presentation, given that they're never explicitly played as figments of Quasi's imagination that they really can seem like the intent is that they really are sentient and so stand out in the film's more real world setting.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm honestly not sure what the intention was - apparently the creators of the film were aware of the idea that they could be imaginary friends, and they're imaginary in the stage musical but then there's all the weirdness that contradicts it... personally I just ignore all the evidence to the contrary and assume they're imaginary for the sake of my own sanity.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's the only way it makes sense to me, really. Even with the contradictions, it just meshes better that way for me. And since I love the movie, I have to make things mesh.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
That's a cool theory. Always thought Notre Dame itself was alive in that movie.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's implied in the opening number, and then again during Frollo's death scene, so I suspect if there was more thought behind the gargoyles than 'lol funny talking statues' they're probably meant to be part of that.
