I've been meaning to do this, but I have Sims 3 rather than 2. Would I be called horribly blasphemous for attempting the legacy challenge on that?

If what I know about Sims 3 is correct, I would think Legacies are precisely what it's good for.

But as it happens, I'm in the market for a new computer and I'm afraid my Sims 2 will eventually reach a point where it's not compatible with the newer Windows (My old one was XP), so I'm trying to really get to understand Sims 3.

With Sims 2, I make little fandom neighborhoods (that sometimes have overlapping fandoms - it's interesting when the Harry Potter and Supernatural gang gets together). I go back and forth between houses and create one giant story, knowing what happens at one house doesn't stay at that house. If Dean beats the hell out of Draco Malfoy in one house (or in a public place), that interaction sticks with both of them (and everyone who saw it) no matter what house I'm playing.

Is that at all possible with Sims 3? Because my understanding was you have a house in a neighborhood, and you play that house. And you can have other neighborhoods with other houses that you play -- and even have mirrors/clones/whatever of your other neighborhoods' characters in any particular 'hood -- but you can't have multiple houses all in one neighborhood that are actually playable. The clones become like NPCs almost.

Is that correct? Is that fun?

No, you can switch which household you're playing in a household in Sims 3, and switch back. The whole thing is very geared up to setting a whole neighbourhood going, and switching from house to house. Of course, the household you're not playing might kill themselves or move house or something while you're not looking, which always makes me wary, but I think that's actually the gameplay you wanted, isn't it?

You can have several copies of a neighbourhood, if you want, and it is the neighbourhood you save, not the household. But yeah, you can switch to controlling different households in your neighbourhood whenever you want.

That sounds chaotic. I'm all for having interactions that aren't limited to the memories of the playing household - - and this does sound like it would be easier to get nonfriends to meet up, but I kind of liked that time paused for the other households and they all just woke up with new memories in Sims 2.

I've been playing a Sims 3 neighborhood for awhile now that's pretty much what you're interested in doing (I've got twelve characters from the same fandom in four households that I switch between, and might add more in the future), so if you have specific questions, I can totally try to answer them. Contrary to what Anon just told you, there are certain things that story progression won't do to households you create. I don't think your Sims will move or die (except of old age) without your permission, for example. They WILL start and end friendships and romantic relationships and gain skills (not that non-playable Sims gain skills easily) and get jobs, but it's fun to see what they do when you're not controlling them, and if you've set up their personalities right, they might very well act in character anyway.

There used to be this amazing story progression mod that I loved, but I believe the guy who made it stopped updating it. I'm going to make sure there's not a new version right now, because damn that mod was great.

da, but I have been told that when you switch a household, the other household loses their wishes, even locked ones, making it really not a suitable game for doing that. Is that true?

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
That is true, yes. However, when you switch back to that household, everyone will immediately get a ton of wishes that you can promise (sometimes the same or similar to the ones they lost, depending on what's going on in their lives). Usually I try to fulfill any big ones I don't think I'm going to get back, but in the longer-term neighborhoods, they get so many lifetime happiness points just from living good lives and fulfilling smaller wishes that it doesn't really matter.

Do you know what type of computer you're planning to get? I went from XP to Windows 7, and my Sims 2 seems to still work pretty well. I can't remember if my computer gave me any grief about compatibility when I put it on, but I haven't really noticed any problems with gameplay.

The Sims 3 looks so tempting to me. I've put off getting it, though, because it's not clear to me exactly how much can happen with your other houses when you're not playing them (I'd heard Sims continued to age). Also, I got The Sims Medieval, which seems technologically similar to The Sims 3, and the graphics are a little sluggish on my computer.

Not at all! There are *tons* of TS3 legacies out there. =)
