I really hope you will be OK nonnie, my condolences to you and your family. And that someday they will really find a cure.

I kind of hate the fact that my second thought after feeling bad for you was "See this is just one more way that SGU sucked!"

TJ. <=c

Really though, I hope that you'll be all right. Is there no test you can have done to put your mind at rest..?

If your father had the familial form, wouldn't you only have a 50% chance of getting it? (unless, by chance, he inherited the gene from both of his parents).

I've never watched this series but ALS runs in my family. My uncle died from it when I was a baby and my little brother had it too. I don't know of anybody else that has ever gotten it as young as he did. Both my older brother and I have had ALS scares too. I don't really have anything comforting to say except that treatment can hinder the disease's progress significantly, which won't stop it from killing you or rendering your body pretty much useless but progress is being made. If only one person in your family had it, it's probable it doesn't run.

I really do hope that you will be OK, OP.

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, OP. I completely sympathize with this. My dad died of ALS. Even though he was a psychotic, emotionally abusive asshole who alienated the entire family and was that way to the very end, I would never, ever, ever wish this disease on anyone - not him, not anyone. And I understand that terror of not knowing. I think(?) the kind my dad had was not genetic? But it's damn near impossible for me to find out for sure, and frankly I'm not even sure I want to know. And even if it wasn't, until they find a cure, how can they even be certain there's only one strain that's genetic, you know? UGH. Sorry, not to freak you/me/anyone out even more. But I just wanted to come in here and tell you that you are NOT alone. :( *hugs*

(Sorry for lots of text - incorrect basic genetics makes me twitch.)

Basic Genetics 101 (in simplified terms):

You have two copies of every gene, one coming from your father and one from your mother. This means you inherit only one of each parent's two copies.

A dominant gene means that no matter what the other copy of the gene you have is, the attribute connected with the dominant gene will be the one that manifests. With recessive genes, both copies must be the recessive gene in order for it to manifest. (This can get a whole lot more complicated when there are more than two options for an attribute or more than one gene contributes to an attribute - like skin tone.)

Why does this matter? If both of a parent's copies of the gene is the dominant one - then yes, there's a 100% chance that his child will also have ALS. However (and what is more common), if the parent only has one copy of the dominant ALS gene, then the odds drop to 50% that his child will inherit the dominant ALS gene.

/unsolicited genetics info

Either way, ALS sucks.

[identity profile] bluejessie.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm annoyed by the poor wording in that quote, as it seems to imply that a parent with a gene will definitely pass it on to their child. This is incorrect. There is a great reference here about ALS, and the genetics of it: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK1450/. Hopefully the information in there is not too technical.

The gist is, only 10% of ALS cases are thought to be familial. (And of those cases, there are multiple gene mutations on different chromosomes that cause the disorder, though SOD1 on chromosome 21 appears to be the most common.) Apart from rare juvenile disorders, these are inherited in a dominant pattern, meaning even if your father was in the 10% of patients with a familial disorder, you would only have a 50% chance of inheriting that gene. (Your father had two chromosomes, and only one had the mutation. It's random chance which one you received.)

I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully this information will help you feel a bit better about your personal health situation. If you continue to have concerns, consider talking to your doctor and getting a referral to a genetic counsellor. They can discuss if there are any testing options available to you.

OP, I'm so sorry. I lost my mother to ALS in September 2009 and her diagnosis came 11 days before her death.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone and I'm so sorry for your loss.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
My dearest condolences to your family.

I know exactly how you feel, OP. My father was diagnosed with it last summer. Watching what it does and knowing there's a possibility that you might end up that way too is just terrifying.

I wish you all the best.

OMG. My condolences. I hope you'll be okay!

TJ's illness (and also her miscarriage ;^;) made me SO SAD... She was my favorite female character in SG:U. I wanted her to have a happy ending so badly...
