A SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT FAN.
A SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT FAN.

I THOUGHT I WAS ALL ALONE!

ALSO, I SHOULD PROBABLY TURN OFF MY CAPSLOCK!

[identity profile] eriu11.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
You are most certainly not alone my friend. And there are more of us out there.

[identity profile] lithiumlaughter.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
*weeps with joy*

It's tricky finding anyone over here in North America that even heard of the books. I stumbled across the first by accident in a bargain bin somewhere, and I've been a convert ever since. We're a rare breed here. It's good to know that other fans exist out there -- you begin to feel like you're the only one who gives a damn, y'know? And all of a sudden, here's a bunch of us. Awesome.

OMG.

SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT!

LET ALL US FANS RUN OFF INTO THE SUNSET TOGETHER.

(And the name system has made me wonder what name I would choose, because Valkyrie Cain is pretty epic.)

Also; bad fan, bad. /smacks with newspaper for pirating, unless you couldn't get it any other way.

... Wait, I library them all. Does that make me a hypocrite?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
library copies have been bought through the regular channels and not pirated like the scum sucker of the OP.

good job, dicklick. what happens when the author decides to no longer write for the series because pirated copies are a huge suck off the royalties?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck, I LOVE those books! I don't know where you live, OP, but here in England I've found the books pretty damn cheap. They often have them in The Works in their 3 for £5 offer, and they're pretty common finds in charity shops. So if it's money issues that are keeping you from buying something you love, there are alternatives that mean you don't have to buy at retail price.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
They also are in Libraries and aren't checked out 95% of the time like a lot of popular series are. (Seriously, I work in a Library and it's freaky how little time the popular books actually sit on a shelf).

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I've noticed that too - for the first month or so, when the latest book comes in, it's checked out, and then it's pretty much ALWAYS there from then on. The same happens with Artemis Fowl, although that could be because my local library is so damn slow to get the new books (it took them a YEAR to get the sixth) that everyone who wanted it had already read it by the time the library got a copy.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
For anyone interested in this series (which is AMAZING, funny and fast-paced and full of awesome action and world-building and focuses on an Irish skeleton detective), who lives in the UK, I'm just going to point at this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Skulduggery-Pleasant-Collection-Books-Derek/dp/0007464983/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1325897306&sr=1-14

Books 1-5 for £9.99. Considering one book alone is £6.99 RRP, that's pretty damn awesome. Hell, I'm tempted to get this, just so mine all match up (my copies of the first three are the original covers).

[identity profile] aibro.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the first book in a while, but holy crap, there are SP fans?

Ehh, I'm not gonna judge you, OP. The producers don't get anything when you check out books/audiobooks/DVDs from the library or borrow your friends' music CDs, pirating doesn't seem that different to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)

thank you for showing the depths of your ignorance, you stupid cunt.

pirating is not the same as borrowing from the library (which has paid for the lending copy) nor is it the same as borrowing a friends CD for a one use burn session.

educate yourself, you dumbfuck. right now you just sound like an entitled ass sucking bottom feeder.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, calm down. Your points are valid - libraries pay for copies, publishers can find out which books are getting loaned out frequently - but being so rude and confrontational means nobody is going to pay attention to what you're actually saying. Libraries are awesome, we don't need a library troll sullying their good name.

[identity profile] niesse.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's identical to borrowing a friend's CD to burn it. Are you even reading what you're typing, or are the rest of the words just framing for the abuse?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Diff anon, and I'm not sure that it is identical to borrowing a friend's CD and burning it.

If you borrow a book from the library, the library will make note of the fact that somebody borrowed this book on this date. These stats not only help the library decide what books to add to their collections, but they also give those who might be interested (i.e. publishers) an idea of what is popular. Also, if you like the book, you may borrow it more than once, or even go out and buy your own copy.

In comparison, if your friend is lending out CDs, the record labels obviously have no way of tracking how many people are listening to that album. And if you burn a copy, you're fairly unlikely to buy a proper copy later because, hey, you already have it now forever and always. So the record labels not only can't get an accurate reading on what artists are popular, but the artist's sales are going to directly suffer.

I think that's the point the above anon was trying to make although, yeah, it got lost in the abuse.

[identity profile] niesse.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, I agree with that completely. I meant that piracy is the same as burning a CD. Angry!anon's second line is basically "Piracy is not the same as library use, nor is it the same as piracy."

Thank you for the secret, cover is intriguing enough for me to check out this series! Though I'll probably get them via the same means... But if I love, I tend to buy for friends like I did this past Christmas.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but the audiobooks are absolutely amazing. As if the writing weren't good enough (which it is), the dude reading the books is just...perfect.

Hope you enjoy it! The series could use more love.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I love the books and I have bought every single one of them, but I can't buy the audiobooks in my country, so I guess I'm gonna end up 'pirating' as well.

Oh well. Next time I'm visiting UK I'll be sure to get them. And honestly, I see nothing wrong with pirating as long as you're supporting the artists as best as you can.

Yaaaay! SP party! I'm just stoked to see fans. ^^

[identity profile] atom-bunny.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
AAH! More Skulduggery Pleasant fans!

I bought the first book from The Works for a couple of quid in their 'last chance' section and I have not looked back. These books deserve to be bought because they are that good!

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, Skulduggery Pleasant! Man, I wish more of my friends read that series.
