Ehh, I'm not gonna judge you, OP. The producers don't get anything when you check out books/audiobooks/DVDs from the library or borrow your friends' music CDs, pirating doesn't seem that different to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)thank you for showing the depths of your ignorance, you stupid cunt.
pirating is not the same as borrowing from the library (which has paid for the lending copy) nor is it the same as borrowing a friends CD for a one use burn session.
educate yourself, you dumbfuck. right now you just sound like an entitled ass sucking bottom feeder.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 03:18 am (UTC)(link)If you borrow a book from the library, the library will make note of the fact that somebody borrowed this book on this date. These stats not only help the library decide what books to add to their collections, but they also give those who might be interested (i.e. publishers) an idea of what is popular. Also, if you like the book, you may borrow it more than once, or even go out and buy your own copy.
In comparison, if your friend is lending out CDs, the record labels obviously have no way of tracking how many people are listening to that album. And if you burn a copy, you're fairly unlikely to buy a proper copy later because, hey, you already have it now forever and always. So the record labels not only can't get an accurate reading on what artists are popular, but the artist's sales are going to directly suffer.
I think that's the point the above anon was trying to make although, yeah, it got lost in the abuse.
