[Code Geass]

This bothers me, like the secret writer thinks male characters are incapable of being Mary Sues or something, or that some people don't think he is a Sue.

I dunno, the whole, "I wish you were a woman so you got what you deserved," tone is really unsettling and sad.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
/agreed

Plus, people use the term 'mary-sue' WAY too much. My handy go-to testing stick for it is simply this-

'Are the spoken or unspoken laws of their universe bending around them to make them happy/even more special?' If yes, a Sue. If no, not a Sue. (Unspoken rules include 'does everyone like them except those who are mean/evil?' Because we expect basic human interaction to hold true unless stated otherwise.)

I find it covers most things people say are 'sue-ish anyway. *shrugs*

This. Like female characters don't have enough to deal with without butthurt fans calling them Sues regardless of whether or not they meet the criteria.

And speaking of that OP, Lelouche is not a Sue. Having a number of love interests does not make a character a Sue right off the bat. Half of the damn series is about how his relationships with everyone suffer because of his actions. If he was a Sue he'd be perfect in the context of that universe: he'd never be wrong in anything he does, and no character would ever call him out on all the insane shit he does over the course of the series. He fucks up ALL THE TIME. He's not a Sue just because you don't like him.

I agree with every part of your comment except the implication that everybody thinks Lelouch is a Sue. I know some people do but I've only heard him referred to as such a small handful of times ever. I think it'd be faulty to call such a clearly flawed character a Sue.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
(Hey OP, I think you need to read this: http://adventuresofcomicbookgirl.tumblr.com/post/13913540194/mary-sue-what-are-you-or-why-the-concept-of-sue-is)

It would have been excellent to see an emotionally complex, powerful female character like Lelouch.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I was hoping somebody would link this. It's not the final word on the subject necessarily but it brought up pretty much all the problems I have with the term and concept of Mary Sue.

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I kinda wish he'd been female because it would have been AWESOME! Seriously, making the Byronic hero a girl would've been super cool. I have an epic gender swap in my head I'll never write, but I wish someone would.

[identity profile] yinake.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
Totally this. I've wanted to write an epic gender switch AU for so long. I think it'll never happen because of all dat work, but I so wish it existed. I saw one on ff.net once but it was bad. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
wth how is Lulu a mary-sue

lol that rhymed.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
troll

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
lulu isn't a sue lmao by the end of the series basically no one likes him until he kills himself then a few people love him but he DIES.... ALONE..... he had a bunch of flaws and was kind of an overdramatic twat who screwed up a lot but he was also very strong

i think he would have made a really cool female character but WELL ANYWAY YOU'RE A TROLL SO...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel you OP.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Mary Sue? I can understand the power side of it, but he's a manipulative douchebag. His personality flaws more than make up for the Geass.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he doesn't need to be a woman for me to acknowledge that he has one pointy-ass chin.

[identity profile] oroburos69.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
You want him to be female in order to make people not like him?

...This makes me sad.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
This has nothing to do with Code Geass, but I had a shitty day and seeing your username put a smile on my face. Thank you for that.

If I may pry, are you into Wesker slash perhaps?

[identity profile] oroburos69.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure who or what Wesker is, but I'm glad you smiled.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Lelouch is a MASSIVE Mary-Sue, but I guess because unlike most things with Sues in the lead roles Code Geass was a pretty good, show that was fun to watch. The fact that people don't hate for him being a M-S is probably down to that, not to the fact he's got a dick.
Don't see sexism where there isn't any.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Does Mary Sue just mean "character I find obnoxious" now? I thought it meant a world-warping perfect wish fulfillment character who is completely out of place and not entertaining to just about anybody.
But actually, considering how many people use "Mary Sue" to mean "female character I don't like," yes, many Lelouch-haters would call him a Sue if he was a woman.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, just today I read a fic review from someone saying that Lelouch is a total Gary Stu and that's why they like him. They want him to be their perfect amazing wish fulfillment character.

Which basically explains a lot of the (bad) fanfic for the show. I don't think Lelouch is a Gary Stu in canon, but there is a whole lot of fic around intent on erasing all the flaws so he becomes one.

[identity profile] lumin0l.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Lelouch isn't a Mary Sue. Don't talk about him like that.
