Yeah, I felt the same. Martine McCutcheon's entire career since Eastenders seems built around her weight as well.

So true. And so fucked up, because she has a lovely figure. She has a round face, rosy cheeks and nice big boobs, and apparently that means fatfatfat to the media. Which is just disgusting.

It's like we're supposed to be OK with the negative comments about her weight in Love Actually because it's taken as read that British audiences know her primarily for being fat.

I don't think it helped that she was all built up to star in My Fair Lady and then had to pull out after only a short period. Of course, the press made out that it was all her fault, that she being lazy or a diva or wasn't good enough or something. Nevermind that the producers of these shows should know putting somebody who hasn't been training for years in a production like that is always going to be a huge strain and the actor will inevitably buckle under the pressure, especially in musicals productions where they're going to end up straining their voice. So her attempts to be taken seriously for her craft just ended up with her being dragged over the coals. By comparison, yoghurt adverts probably seem a better choice.

That whole affair made me uncomfortable - I remember she was either nominated or won some award for her performance and Jonathan Pryce was disparaging her in the press which was quite nasty. She got all the flack for it when, as you say, the people who cast her played a part because they wanted the publicity. (I have the case recording of the production and she's rather good on it actually.) She never seems to have quite come back from all that.
