[Love Actually]

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I felt the same. Martine McCutcheon's entire career since Eastenders seems built around her weight as well.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
So true. And so fucked up, because she has a lovely figure. She has a round face, rosy cheeks and nice big boobs, and apparently that means fatfatfat to the media. Which is just disgusting.

I don't think it helped that she was all built up to star in My Fair Lady and then had to pull out after only a short period. Of course, the press made out that it was all her fault, that she being lazy or a diva or wasn't good enough or something. Nevermind that the producers of these shows should know putting somebody who hasn't been training for years in a production like that is always going to be a huge strain and the actor will inevitably buckle under the pressure, especially in musicals productions where they're going to end up straining their voice. So her attempts to be taken seriously for her craft just ended up with her being dragged over the coals. By comparison, yoghurt adverts probably seem a better choice.

I don't remember the movie well enough to comment, but this makes me want to watch it again.

[identity profile] badass-tiger.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Y-you know it was a parody, right? That it was meant to play on how people go on and on about their figure when they have the most beautiful body ever?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
What?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's quite possible that was the intent, but if so then the execution fell flat. Especially since it wasn't her character going on and on about her weight, it was other characters as well, which completely undermines the message you're saying it was trying to portray.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Points for trying, but I don't think you're quite clear on what a parody is. Perhaps, we're meant to recognize the negative name-calling as being unfair and inaccurate, but everyone in the movie treats this as perfectly acceptable response to the character's appearance and not once is it ever questioned or called out as being utter bullshit.

It's also not the character who goes on and on about her figure, it's other characters referring to her weight. Frex: when the PM asks one of his staff to transfer Natalie, the staff member refers to her as "the chubby girl" with "a sizeable ass" and "huge thighs". Not only is that an incredibly cruel thing to say about a co-worker, it's also breathtakingly unprofessional to say it in a conversation with the boss.

At best, that scene was incredibly contrived and clumsy. Having the character apologize for being the target of sexual harassment was even more appalling.

For a long time I thought I was the only person in the universe who didn't really like this movie.

[identity profile] miss-zedem.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. Everyone else seemed to love it, but I really disliked it.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really not a good film - it's a guilty pleasure for me and I imagine most other people. Plus I guess there's so many subplots that most people will like at least one of them?

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
This! That's one of the few things I hated about that movie (I don't like how the heavier sister for the girl who can't speak english with the boyfriend who can't speak... er what did she speak again? and her father talk to each other. It's abusive.)

Otherwise I love that movie.

[identity profile] stepstostars.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
Portuguese!

I do kind of sideeye that part and how it's supposed to be okay because it's being played for laughs, but I loved that subplot in general, though.
ext_19953: (it's just an object. (in SPAAAAACE))

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
........yeah, that's very true. I heart that movie but not every moment in it is lovely and sweet, and that was mean and awful

[identity profile] oroborusfox.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I always took David's confusion about everyone calling her fat to be an indication that it was a parody. He was as baffled as the audience.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
^this

I know it's a touchy subject, but the point was how cruel and ridiculous the world can be towards a girl who is slightly heavier than hollywood-thin, and how David was kind and reasonable enough to ignore their petty assessments.

Just because there is a disagreeable element in a movie, doesn't mean the writer/director/actors endorse the sentiment. Their words and opinions were not the point- they weren't applauded or vindicated.

Oh, look. It appears to be yet another probable reason why I've blocked this stupid fucking movie from my memory.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
They didn't get together because she apologized for sexual harrassment. He had her fired or what-have-you, because his feelings for her interfered with his job, and it was hugely inappropriate for the Prime Minister of England to date an employee. He knew she had been unfairly propositioned by the President. It was Natalie who wrongly assumed she was fired for macking on the President. He challenged the man on live television, for her! The man was obviously a slime- there was no confusion on David's part. All her Christmas card did was spur him to take action, because he realized she felt similarly towards him, and decided to take a chance. Not because she had cleared up whether or not she was a slut. He was aware.

Coincidentally enough, I just saw Love Actually for the first time tonight.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying that it wasn't sexual harassment, but I will say that she kissed back. She shouldn't have HAD to apologize, but I see nothing wrong with apologizing.

Also, you know that people say "sorry" when it's not their fault, right? Like, if I say "I'm sorry your cat died," that doesn't mean I murdered Mittens. She's just sorry about the situation.

I always thought he fired her because he felt she would be as put off by an advance from him as she was by one from the President. I also never interpreted her apology as driven by her sexual harassment, but more the fact that something she couldn't control came between them. "I'm sorry this happened to us," rather than "I'm sorry that happened to me," in other words.

Also the fat jokes were for comic value because, very obviously, she is not fat. Hence Hugh Grant's like, "Wwwwould we call her chubby?"

I love this movie but the comments about her weight always bothered me and that she apologized for getting hit on by the creeper president.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
i thought that the comments about her being fat were supposed to be ridiculous?

the having to apologise for sexual harassment bit was definitely not good at all
