I'm not all that familiar with Chobits, but weren't the persocoms essentially just robots with sophisticated AI and not actually sentient? It seems creepy as all get out to want a BFF or a lover you can just turn off, that you are in complete control over. I'm all for sentient machines where is robot is just like a real person, but a master/slave relationship? No way.

This. Chobits argues more in favor of that kind of relationship rather than diving too much into the aspects of how a robotic lover can be "abused."

at the same time, isn't it a BILLION times better for people who would abuse other human beings to instead abuse a robot? I mean, it seems like that would actually be a good outlet for some people, in addition to giving lonely people companionship, tired people help, commitment-wary people part-time relationships, etc...

I never really thought I'd be arguing in favor of something like this, lol

Normal persocoms are just normal robots, yes, but Chii (robot girl) is one of the breakthrough Chobits that are sentient. But either way, all robots can be turned off, sentient or not.
