[Chobits]

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I would take a boyfriend from Absolute Boyfriend. They're whatever you want, and because they're robots, you don't have to feel guilty when you just don't want to be around them. You can just shut them off.

I know the whole point of 99.9% of those "Pinocchio" type stories is that if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be one, but I don't even care. I'm a stone-hearted bitch and I don't like spending time with people the vast majority of the time, but when I DO, I wish someone was around. Much better to have a robot than a person who can feel emotionally injured by that kind of behaviour.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Word to all of this. If I didn't know better, I'd think I was anon-commenting in my sleep or some shit.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with the first part.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-01-10 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
You can find people like you who can't take too much contact. My idea of dating is... meeting every two weeks or so and hardly ever communicating. (As such, I generally end up in casual sex relationships because I hate clinginess.) I know a guy who is also like this. We hang out every few months, and have for years. We're good friends.

Look around.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about dating one, but I would totally use one to just hang out with and to be my friend. It's probably just as pathetic, but at least I wouldn't have to worry about drama shit. It's not even like I don't have friends either. I think it would just be easier.

[identity profile] wynndfae.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I've had these thoughts since first reading The Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee. Sometimes, something bordering on magical like this is just preferable.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
The Silver Metal Lover was amazing (IMO) because it dealt with what it really means to be created and to have consciousness and feelings. I mean, it wasn't just "Hey, somebody does a robot!"

(Not saying Chobits is that; I didn't read it! I'm just saying that I totally get where you're coming from with that book.)

I guess I do think this is the kind of thing that's great in fantasy and might be not-so-great in real life, but... meh, it's not possible in real life yet (and who knows if we'll ever reach that level of AI...) so I'm not going to judge anyone.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
It could be some kind of latent robot fetish; the idea of AI gaining sentience is pretty appealing for alot of people.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
If she's a fully sentient being, only made out of metal or whatever, I don't see the problem.
(Is she? Never got around to reading that series.)

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I won't get into it much for spoilers but Chii (that robot) is one of a special kind of robot in Chobits, a series rumored to be capable of emotion. I really do recommend the manga, it's a very nice read with a very likeable protagonist and different takes on human/robot relationships as well as human ones. It's a lovely series about love, to put it simply.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
i get this.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's the only kind of "person" I could date. I can't do relationships with real people. Way too much bullshit. No sex can ever be that good that it's worth putting up with everything else.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
+1. Especially because I have no idea of how to get an actual girl- or boy-friend, so just being able to buy a robot one sounds way easier. Real Dolls freak me out, but I'd love a persacom. This makes me feel super guilty, because I'm familiar with the SF genre and the Unfortunate Implications behind programmed companions/pleasure models/whatever.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of get the feeling that every commenter in this threat tries to be creepier than the one above...

this. jesus christ

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
you are all incredibly fucking out of touch and you need to see someone

it's okay to not want to be in a relationship, there's nothing wrong with that, but at the end of the day there is something to be said for human company. if you would prefer the company of a robot just so you can "turn them off" when you need your space, then you are Doing It Wrong-- humanity, that is. relationships are hard and people can be very difficult to deal with, but imperfection is what makes life interesting.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
...And it's people like you that make me wish humans had an "off" switch. Just sayin'.

I made the first comment about wanting to "turn people off" and hey, it's cool that you're a social person, but some of us aren't. There are a lot of people who are just nonsocial. I prefer to be alone, and I'm okay. You prefer human company, and you're okay.

We're both okay. Keep your judgment to yourself, you're just making yourself look like a jerk. Not all people are just like you. jsyk.

I'm more bothered by the fact she looks really young than that she's a robot. Also, cat-ears?

I'm not all that familiar with Chobits, but weren't the persocoms essentially just robots with sophisticated AI and not actually sentient? It seems creepy as all get out to want a BFF or a lover you can just turn off, that you are in complete control over. I'm all for sentient machines where is robot is just like a real person, but a master/slave relationship? No way.

I think I would consider dating a persocom, too, but more because I'm a demi-romantic ace, and so I sincerely doubt I'll ever find someone a) who is ace, or at least willing to go celibate, and b) who I'll fall in love with. A persocom doesn't solve the second issue, but it makes the first issue moot.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. For a while, my favourite song was Coin Operated Boy (in b4 lolol it's about a vibrator). It just sounds so appealing!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
You don't want to spend time with other people? That's perfectly okay with me. You'd rather spend time with robots? If you need companionship and are looking for it with programs, it's just sad.

I'm glad there are people who think everyone else in the world are assholes and would rather not talk to anyone, though (not OP, but the ones who replied above). At least this means I would not meet them in real life and have to converse with any of them. They seem like the larger assholes to me, nitpicking everyone else while making no effort to interact with another human being.

I can't see the appeal. Part of the appeal of human relationships is slowly discovering new things about someone; unraveling the mystery. A persocom would just live to please you and have no personality. I tend to enjoy conflict, though, so an eternally kind and understanding persocom would drive me batty. I want someone with a will of their own who will challenge me and force me to re-evaluate my ideas and worldview.

....seriously I feel like the only normal person on this thread
