I get your point, but on the other hand the threat of sexual violence is more of an issue for women than men in real life, so it makes sense that it would be so in fiction.

I dunno' about that - I've seen the Russian nuclear launch codes get stolen by terrorists who intend to nuke the US countless times in fiction and I have yet to run into that problem in real life.

What I mean to say is that there are all kinds of social problems that don't show up in fiction as often as they occur in real life (e.g. clinical depression) and those that crop up in fiction far more often than they do in real life (stolen launch codes). That we're actively choosing to represent female rape so often is in fact significant, even if it reflects real life. Because fiction so often doesn't.
