This secret makes me sad. Why not wish that female characters stop getting raped instead of wishing rape onto male characters? :(

Yeah, 2 wrongs don't make a right, and all that. Plus, every time a man gets sexually abused in fiction, it always seems to be played as "making him more female," which pisses me off.

This secret makes me profoundly uncomfortable for any number of reasons.

I'm just trying to tell myself it doesn't matter what people wish on fictional characters and it's not working.

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
seriously. I would like less unnecessary rape scenes in general, not to live in a world of endlessly triggering media (not triggering for me personally, but other people exist, you know?)

one can wish BOTH

I'm not the OP and I don't really want more male characters to get raped but I'm just sayin'

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
This. This approach of the OP's sounds counterproductive. We have enough Rape as Backstory these days anyway.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Leveling the playing field, of course!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I like your use of the Corpse Party manga for the secret.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I thought boys are just as likely to get raped as girls?

[identity profile] twistedbones.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
No. 1 in 6 American women and 1 in 33 American men have experienced rape in their lifetime.

I wish they would drop it for both sides. Its so cliche and boring.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, man. It seems like the majority of the time rape is implied on a male character it's treated as comedy. I think that creeps me out more than women being raped for drama (although that's WAY overdone).

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of an episode in Dexter, where Dexter has just tied a female victim onto a table and is about to kill her. The whole episode she's been saying how men will rape women, no exceptions, etc. So she assumes Dexter is gonna rape her before he finishes her. His response? He just rolls his eyes and goes "What is with you and rape? Eww." Well, something like that anyway.

Back to topic. I get what you mean, but you have a really unfortunate wish. Spreading rape never helps.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
(TL;DR coming)...I don't necessarily feel this secret, but I get why you do. Cause it is SUCH BULLSHIT that seriously almost every fucking time a story puts a female character totally at the mercy of a man, it's always a threat, it's always implied, that little alarm in my head always starts going off. Even if it doesn't actually happen. It's what also puts the rare movie where it doesn't happen, like The Descent (which I already loved without this extra angle) in SO MUCH HIGHER ESTEEM for me, because these guys don't want to rape these girls, they want to kill and eat them. Still horrible, but not gendered and misogynistic and objectifying and a Power Thing and a danger it seems women ALWAYS HAVE TO FACE in tv and movies and men ALMOST NEVER do.

I do agree that it would be better to instead have rape be less of a plot point in general, cause it's seriously fucking overdone at this point, but I can still appreciate the balls of every movie/show/thing that puts a guy in that position instead without playing it for laughs, obviously, cause that is a whole other pile of what the FUCK.

I totally get what you're saying and I agree, but that sentence totally read to me like "Yeah, they kill her and eat her corpse, but at least they're not sexist. That would be AWFUL."

I don't want them to as a form of comeuppance for what's generally done to female characters, but I at least have to admit it would be way, way less cliche at this point. Particularly if it's not played for laughs.

It doesn't help that I have a acquaintance for whom the rape (of women) in a series automatically makes him impressed by how "gritty" and "realistic" it is, and how it "doesn't pull any punches". It could involve flying purple unicorns, but the moment there's rape (of a woman) it's a serious narrative to be respected and "doesn't patronize" its audience. At first I just thought it was weird, but.... okay.... until I watched something with (male) rape in it with him, and he couldn't stop whinging about how "unrealistic" it was, and how he "totally could have gotten out of that" and how the creators "had an agenda". This was in fucking prison, too. Oh gee, why isn't this "gritty" and "realistic" and treating you like an adult?

Now I imagine this guy mouthbreathing in ecstasy every single time I see a (female) rape scene and it crushes my enjoyment of the whole story. (And when I see a male rape scene I recommend it to a friend of a friend who'll watch it with him ;p)

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
...Well, I can tell why this is a secret.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
This is an awful thing to hope for.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
I get your point, but on the other hand the threat of sexual violence is more of an issue for women than men in real life, so it makes sense that it would be so in fiction.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Logically I know your wrong. I know the way to go about it is like the person above said: hope for less rape of women, but my gut reaction, in fandom and out, has always been the same as yours.

Why the fuck should we care? They created the monster of rape, the only fair thing is for them to suffer most from it, right? Nobody feel symnpathy for frankenstein, right?

TL;DR: Right or wrong, I'm totallaly with you

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, there will never been endless female characters getting raped in the world. hell, there's no obvious prevention of it. i also feel for OP but... men, in most weakest link, will not get raped, they just get "broken" or "killed". but if they are getting one, ring the bell for me, OP...

sorry me ESL, get it.
