I could barely read this secret. Sorry, I know it's the point and all, but I'm seeing stars...

you're saying they have a similar color scheme to the one in your secret

BUT WHY

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I normally don't say things like this, but that sounds really petty. :/ Well, if that's really more important to you than the fic you could be missing, I guess do what you gotta do. *shrug*

I agree. If the color scheme in your journal gives me an instant migraine just looking at it, I'm not reading your fic and no amount of "but it's really good fic!" will change my mind on it.

Ah, yes, LJ's new "Perry the Platypus" layout.

MY EYES

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
This is the reason I disabled custom comment pages on my journal. I mean I don't use crazy colors or anything, but the default (used to be) so much more pleasant for reading.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I had to lower my monitor's brightness to be able to look at this secret. Ugh. I know it's the point of the secret and all but I don't care, my eyes hurt. You seriously needed to do that?

[identity profile] tamabonotchi.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
The colors automatically make me rage

Can someone elaborate on this 'LJ light thing'?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of one journal where there are a lot of moving gifs on the side, and I can't read the fic because it's so distracting.

Is there a way to view a journal entry on a plain background?

I can't read long fics online at all, what I sometimes do is copy/paste the fic in a Word file because I'm more used to reading things from there. :S

Did you ever think about copying-pasting the text into a word document and reading the story that way? You can even save the file with an html extension and use any color scheme your heart desires.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Soo......you're much too lazy to maybe follow the author for a short while, to make sure your "friends page" is in YOUR STYLE or the default for LJ, so you can read it without your precious eyes bleeding? Or, if it's in a comm you follow, you can't do the same damn thing?

.....yeah no. Sorry. That's really fucking petty.

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I just have a style=mine javascipt button in the bookmarks bar. I don't remember where I got it though.

You... do realize that LJ has those handy little "view all journals/comment pages in my style" options, right?

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I use Readability (http://www.readability.com/) to get rid of ugly color schemes and obnoxious moving .gifs and icons. They have a firefox add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/readability/), so all I have to do is click a tiny icon and bam! Readable! I still give them a chance even if they have the design sense of a 12 year old on their first geocities page.

I also like Readability because it cuts out all the comments, so the length of the page is just the fic and not the 5,000 comments that follow.

Don't most people cross-post to FF.net, A03, or something? (I haven't read a whole lot of fics on LJ; going through some comms with no tags is torture!)

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
If this is your taste in visuals...

No, I know it isn't. It's annoying. But dude, lots of us suck it up and find work arounds in order to read our fics. Just take, I don't know, a minute out of your time to google "Readability", download, put it in your toolbar and any fic that has a layout that doesn't meet your standard is *bam* legible with a single mouse click for ever after. What's more it works on all sites, not just LJ, so FF.net, any fandom archives you find, hell, non-fandom related blogs are a mouseclick away from being plain text.

... at least LJ has that option?

I mean, I remember reading fanfic on Geocities pages back in the day... ye gods.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
On the subject of background colours, does anyone else find it really hard to read white on black? I don't understand why it's such a problem, but it is, I see ghost text for a good five minutes and it hurts. (On LJ I view everything "in own style" so that's not an issue here)

[identity profile] fer-de-lance.livejournal.com 2012-01-19 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. Somebody wrote a story and put it up for you to read, for free (or even at cost, if they have a paid journal)... and you think they also owe you aesthetic veto power over their journal?

By all means, don't read it if it's TOO HARD to copypasta into a document, or add words to a URL (I do understand that some formats are very hard to read in! If you honestly don't want to make the effort, then don't do it), but the entitlement in "THEY need to set up THEIR journals to make reading a free story easier for ME!" strikes my ear as awfully rude. (You probably don't even comment on fics you read, anyway, right? It's too inconvenient to use the Comment button because everyone's format is different, and if they want to know what you think about their story then THEY should email YOU!)

I'm beginning to understand why F!Secrets has a reputation for wank. (I've been away for a while. I guess it shows.)
