I'm not familiar with her. I 'think' I saw something on ONTD about her being a YA author who self published, someone found her books, she 'sold out' to a publisher, blew up and is becoming the next twilight. OR I'm just blurring all the YA book posts on there since that always seems to happen.

Wrong YA author. She never self-published, nor was she really accused of selling out.

People who don't know their fandom wank make me feel so old!

I don't know if it was wank. Like I said, not familiar with her. I was hoping someone would explain the situation.

I'm starting to feel old too. D:

She wrote a famous, really long Draco Malfoy centric fic when HP fics were still starting out. She got a MASSIVE following (take your most famous BNFs in today's most popular fandoms and then triple that) because not only was she good, she was "original" (oh the irony); unfortunately for her, being internet-famous also meant lots of people were gonna read her stuff. People, who instantly recognized she was a plagiarist. At first she denied it.
Anyway, after lots of wank, some of which found its way into real life, she used the publicity to her advantage and got herself a publisher, on the condition that her fic would be removed from the internet.

She's now famous, and her Draco Trilogy is hard to get your hands on, but possible if you know where to look.
She got her cake and ate it, too.

(Also: she's probably single-handedly responsible for the Draco in Leather Pants treatment, if you're familiar with the term.)

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Not familiar with that term. As much as I like HP, haven't read any of the fic for it.

That story is really interesting. I wonder if all authors have to take down their fics once they get published. I like mine and wouldn't want to remove them.

So did she plagiarize other people's stuff and admitted to it?

I'd guess that so long as you've never stated your real name in association with your fandom works, you probably wouldn't have to take it down. CC's an, ah, special case.

She gave several different stories iirc- first she denied it, saying it was an "homage" to one particular author (never mind all the plagiarism from other authors and television shows), then when people explained that pages of word-for-word copying with only the names changed was a bit more than an "homage", suddenly it was a passage from a book that she copied into a notebook and thought was hers!

Sorry for the infodump, I'm a little bit obsessed with this fandom story- it's just so bizarre.

Don't apologize, it's interesting. I had no idea who this woman was until the first Cassandra Clare secret a little while back... which is really sad given that I lurked in the HP fandom around the same time.

Heh, it seems she started out as a Harry/Hermione shipper, and then progressed through various pairings (and in so doing, became well known in different areas) judging by what I've read of The Draco Trilogy (her magnum opus). The Draco Trilogy itself surprised me by just how lousy it was- understandably it has been almost entirely Jossed by books five through seven*, but even beyond that many of the characterization choices seem flat out random- which makes sense when you realize all the main characters are essentially cobbled together versions of other character, i.e. Draco is Spike (BtVS)/Rimmer(Red Dwarf)/Ted (Secret Country Trilogy)/etc.

*which isn't really an excuse, because I've read a few other stories from the period between Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix that, even if they were later Jossed, made a fairly good case for their interpretation of canon

No, afaic, thank you so much for the info-dump, lol! I've never quite managed to find out the full story re CC, so up to now my knowledge of it was fairly ropey. :¬)

You're welcome! If you ever have some hours to kill and want to read a super comprehensive version, this is a fairly definitive explanation of what went down from the person who reported CC for plagiarism in the first place. It also has several run downs of exactly what was plagiarized and how the excuses kept changing. I think one of the most mind boggling parts was the bit where somebody actually got one of the authors CC plagiarized involved. It's a long, long multi-part read though.

One author I read mentions her published book on her fanfiction.net page. I think publishers wouldn't care as long as it's not causing them any problems.

You're forgetting the part where she had her fans buy her a new laptop because hers was stolen.

[identity profile] myuki-chan.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
And an iPod because she wanted one.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
She was the one who shamed the cancer patient who asked if she'd link to a fundraiser on patient's behalf?

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Did she fake her own death for sympathy at some point, too? Or create a sock to make herself look better in the fandom? Or am I confusing her with other situations on that score? It's been a long time ...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-24 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Cassie Clare? No, she didn't do those things.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
i think you're thinking of colleen houck
