Eh, I don't feel too bad about refusing to read her books. I generally try to separate books from their authors (see: everything Orson Scott Card has ever written), but I feel like blatant plagiarism is pretty relevant. Also, they just don't look very good, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, what CC did is worse than Orson Scott Card's offensive dickery? Fandom sure knows how to hold a grudge.

Priorities, people.

"I believe in second chances.. I still.l don't like her as a person tho"

I love when people say things to make themselves look good and then completely contradict themselves. And that's not to say I'm some sort of CC apologist. I never read her fics, have certainly never read her books, have no desire to do either and am forever turned off just by the whole "I thought it was just a note of mine!" thing. But at least I'm honest about it.

she looks kind of creepy here h-ha

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've thought about reading them, but they just don't look all that interesting to me. I usually don't give a rat's ass about the authors themselves, to be honest. I might still give them a shot though, if only to see what all the fuss is about.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 12:57 am (UTC)(link)

Heh, I sort of wish I knew what CC did back in the HP fandom before investing money into her books. Maybe then I wouldn't have to go looking for fans to discuss plot points with. It's not a brilliant series, but I did genuinely enjoy the plot and everyone except Jace. The dialog was kind of forced at times (like everything had to be a pun with no room for seriousness) and Jace came off as a bit of a Gary-Stu. But overall, it's a guilty pleasure.

I really liked Alec, Clary, Isabelle, and Mangus. And after reading the trilogy, spoiler:

Sorry for the ranting. Anon is just frustrated that now that she's invested in this series she has no one to discuss it with who doesn't hate it or loves everything about it and Jace.

I'm not familiar with her. I 'think' I saw something on ONTD about her being a YA author who self published, someone found her books, she 'sold out' to a publisher, blew up and is becoming the next twilight. OR I'm just blurring all the YA book posts on there since that always seems to happen.

I've read all her books. I've never noticed any plaigarism, or read of anyone else noticing any. And I imagine if there were any, someone would have caught it by now, given how high profile she is. If that's actually what your problem is?

They're good books, if you're looking for a particular genre of YA. They do what they're meant to, and they're satisfying reads, like particularly polished fic available in shiny hardcover. Fiesty heroine, hot boys, openly queer characters, good snark, compelling world-building. And the only copied bits are the passages straight from the Draco Trilogy in the first book, which she included as a sort of easter egg.

I'm probably coming across as a stan, but I'm not. I observed the wank from the sidelines back in the day, and I saw why people were upset. But I don't think people should be haunted forever by the mistakes they make when young and writing on the internet for free. When I see the horrifying crap some people spew about her years after this all happened (including so much terrible body shaming) it makes me really disappointed in fandom. Get over it, people. Most of us have made mistakes in our fannish lives, and I've seen so much worse than Cassie Claire.

Just in case you aren't actually a troll- Seriously? Get over it.

For goodness sake. She did that on purpose. It was a game. It was fun, and still probably one of the best Harry Potter fics ever because ten years later people are still talking about it.

You don't want to read the books? Fine. They aren't that great. But for the love of all that's holy just drop it.

I'm friends with her, so not particularly even remotely objective...but even if I weren't, I think if there were anything like that going on in her books, it would've been found out by now, especially since Cassie has tons of haters who are totally invested in looking for stuff like that. I wouldn't worry about it. If the books appeal to you, read them.

I tried reading her first series; got a few chapters in, though "wtf even is this, and why am I reading it?" and went on to better things :p For some reason I just thing professionally published books shouldn't feel so much like fanfiction. (And I've never read her fanfics, so I can't comment on that.) Meh.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Rumors, rumors, but a few days back someone mentioned that she and her cronies dogpiled and shamed a cancer patient who asked her if she could help them raise funds for their treatment, after said cancer patient saw how people tripped over themselves to give CC money to buy a new laptop. Whatever tiny need I had to give her the benefit of the doubt went down the drain.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know much about her besides what I've read here. All I know is that I love Alec/Magnus. That's enough for me.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
They are crap.

[identity profile] casual-fan.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
OP said: "especially when I think how much passion she has for writing"

I can see where you would think that, but after you read further than the original trilogy you'll find this just isn't true. Unfortunately, in both the (blatant cash cow grab) continuation of the original Mortal Instruments Trilogy and the Infernal Devices trilogy, she merely recycles the characters, plot points, etc. And man did she overuse metaphors terribly in City of Fallen Angels. That one just read like it needed at least one more edit before it was published. And that rushed feeling made the "let's milk this for all its worth" angle seem even more plausible.

Personally, after enjoying the first trilogy, and then being utterly disappointed by the other spinoffs, I'm no longer sinking anymore money into her books or writing.

Huh, the original writer of these was a Harry Potter fanfic writer?... And began the Draco in Leather Pants trope?...

Geesh, no wonder I read the summary and thought 'meh'. (Yes, I am horribly judgmental about a book's summary and cover. But 99.9% of the time I am correct in the quality, so I don't feel too bad about it.)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've only read a few chapters, but frankly, I don't think you're missing much. Drama and plagiarism aside, the writing just isn't very good.

[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Frankly, I don't think you're missing much. I started reading City of Bones after a relative recommended it to me. Imo, the characters were kind of two dimensional, and the writing style itself was distinctly... fanficcy, for lack of a better word. (The one thing it was good at was motivating me to work on my own stories. While I was reading it, I kept thinking "if this can get published, maybe I shouldn't be so embarrassed about my own writing.")

With that being said, if you do want to try the books, you could always borrow them from the library or a friend or something.

I've only been able to make it halfway through one of her books before I gave up. I'm honestly curious if her plagiarized fics had better prose than her original stories.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I'm not familiar with this author but after reading some of the other posts, she sounds like an ass.
