Frankly, I don't think you're missing much. I started reading City of Bones after a relative recommended it to me. Imo, the characters were kind of two dimensional, and the writing style itself was distinctly... fanficcy, for lack of a better word. (The one thing it was good at was motivating me to work on my own stories. While I was reading it, I kept thinking "if this can get published, maybe I shouldn't be so embarrassed about my own writing.")

With that being said, if you do want to try the books, you could always borrow them from the library or a friend or something.

Hah, that's what I was thinking when I read Twilight. As soon as I closed that book, my first thought was 'Well, if this can be a best seller, I should be able to at the very least get published.'

I read the books, just to give them a shot-- I don't read HP fanfic, either, but her name was just... out there. The whole thing *read* like a bad crossover between Buffy and Harry Potter. It was like I was reading a fanfic the entire way through.
