Was that in fanfiction or in actual books though?

Because if you take a line from a tv series and put it in a fanfiction, isn't it kind of still just fanfiction but of other shows too?

It was of fanfiction, but no. If you take *actual* text from Source A and put it uncredited into your fic from Source B as if it is being said or done by Source B' characters in an entirely different context, it is not now a fic of Source A and Source B.

It is a fanfic of Source B with plagiarized material from Source A. And to me, I think that's a perfectly valid reason to be critical of an author -- especially one who not only did such as an adult but also then went on to be successfully published (and though I haven't read her books, the general consensus seems to be that they are essentially her Draco trilogy with the serial numbers filed off and plagiarized bits removed.)

da

The problem is she was passing it off as her own work. She didn't credit the originals and sometimes just changed names/locations, but otherwise wrote stuff exactly as it was used in the original source(s). (She used lines from tv shows and entire passages from books, etc.) She only started crediting when people called her out on it.
That's plagiarizing, not making fanfiction.

Yeah, but people were quoting the same lines she lifted from television series and attributing them specifically to her. There were also key plot points from other books (Sorcery And Cecilia, iirc) that people not only thought were her original ideas, she used as her pen names and signature. It's sort of impossible to understand how popular she was back in the day- it would never happen now, at least not in Harry Potter fandom, because there's just too many people with too diverse areas of interest in the canon.

More to the point, it wasn't just tv- there were pages and pages of nothing but lifted text from books like Pamela Dean's The Hidden Land, with names switched around.

I don't think anyone's found any plagiarism in her published work, and I sincerely hope that's because there isn't any.
