Yeah, they kinda failed at attracting a new crowd. At least with Superman (which is arguably one of the ones they really should have gotten right). It's not that it was bad, it just left out so much info that new people didn't know which left me scratching my head. It had no proper introduction of the characters, and I got the feeling that they chopped the baby in half in order to try and appease both mothers (Old fans and potential new fans). If they really wanted to bring in a bunch of new people and be effective at it, they either should have done a total and complete reboot or... *gasps* Do what a lot of other authors do and start a new plotline that only alludes lightly to past events! Like one of those sequal-thingies when it is years later, or something. If they advertised the hell outta that and did it well I would so buy it.
Also, Lois Lane is supposedly a high-powered news woman and yet she wears mini skirts, just-outta-bed hair, and PURPLE LIPSTICK.
Seriously. What woman wears purple lipstick to work? (Barring having a alternative-esque job, of course.) I feel like the artists didn't even bother to look at any number of women working in the news... that aren't one of the ones on fox, of course. But even they don't wear purple lipstick.

Lol I this bothered me, too, though more the grossly unprofessional mini-skirt than the purple lipstick. They sure make it hard to forget that in actuality Lois is just the creation of some clueless dude with a pencil.
Also, they didn't really do anything new with Superman anyway: ok, yes, his parents are dead but erasing his marriage really means nothing unless they are committed to not putting them back together and exploring new love interests/relationships, which they don't seem to be. Everything else just seems like an update of the same stuff which wasn't selling in the first place.

And AGREED. I actually was ticked that they broke them up only to set them up to get together again. It makes no sense! And I don't even follow the comics! They could have done so many awesome things with the Superman/Lois dynamic, and instead... we get the same old stuff that didn't sell before, like you said.

I still love the characters. I haven't given up on the other sources, like the video games, the animated series, and both the animated and live action movies. I just don't like what they've become in the comics.
I think what the writers at DC fail to realize is that the characters are much bigger than the comic books now. And not just the Trinity, but even "smaller" characters like Green Lantern, Starfire, Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn, and Superboy. Until the Ryan Reynolds movie, there were quite a few people who didn't realize that the Green Lantern wasn't always a black man named John Stewart. An entire generation got to know Amanda "The Wall" Waller as a tough, no-nonsense woman built like her namesake, while another grew up loving a sweet and playful (but still badass) Starfire. I understand that characters need to grow and change, but turning the former into an uninteresting stick and the latter into a blow up doll is going to alienate a lot of fans.
