I agree that it's all very stereotypical, but I know for me it's about a sense of belonging. Some of us like the comfort of being able to say (or pretending, anyways) that we belong to something.

[identity profile] random00.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. I'd also like to add that, sure, some people think it's a little juvenile, but it's fun. I don't see the harm in it.

I'm a Harry Potter fan and I don't really fully identify with any of the houses. If I were to be a Gryffindor, it would be the same way Neville was a Gryffindor; I like the idea of bravery and adventure, but on the surface I'm really shy and wimpy. There's bravery deep down there (at least, I hope so)... I used to think I was a Ravenclaw, but I'm not very smart... there's nothing really Slytherin about me... and Hufflepuff, I always pictured as the house for normal, well-adjusted, happy kids- the Nice Jocks, the heads of the clubs, the kids who aren't super brilliant but hard-working enough to do excellent in school, the kids who say hi to everyone in the hallways and stay out of drama. Those kinds of people are awesome, but I'm wayy to flighty, lazy, disorganized and too much of an emotional mess to be one of them. That's just my interpretation of the houses, though.
Anyway, I don't really like the house sorting thing for that reason, but if people do identify with a house and like the feeling of belonging, that's cool. Fandom's supposed to be fun, of course.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, I usually get Ravenclaw in the online quizzes and whatnot but I have no idea which house I'd be sorted in because I don't think I fit any of them.

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I was actually talking about this last night, so here's the conclusion I've come to: the Hogwarts houses are chosen based on the sortees' basic personal motivations. Ravenclaws want to know why things work, Hufflepuffs build and rely on their communities and interpersonal relationships, Slytherins want to be the best there is at what they do, and Gryffindors are motivated simply by their own personal ideals of right and wrong. Granted, I don't have a lot of evidence, but that's how I like to think it works. So stop thinking about how you're maybe not smart enough for Ravenclaw (which probably isn't true), or not brave or outgoing enough for Gryffindor (ditto), because those are the results of the basic personality, not the causes. TL;DR I think about sorting way too goddamn much for someone who doesn't give a shit.

And Neville is a Gryffindor because, even when it could cost him pain, suffering, or the opinion of his peers, he does what's right.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
...hmmh, hey, that's an interesting theory. I think I will adapt it as a head canon :)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not smart enough to be a Ravenclaw? You always seemed pretty smart to me. I love your comments.

Not sure what the other two are, but I've always thought the houses in HP were just a fun silly way to get more involved in fandom that people ended up taking too seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just glad ATLA isn't up there. That's the only one I've seen where each "group" has a variety of individuals.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
So does Hunger Games. Your district is just where you're born and dictates what job you do, but ultimately it's just where you live.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Man, this reminds me I've been trying to apply to that fancy community where they supposedly select you to a Hogwarts house based on a long, meaningful questionnaire (that's voted on).

I must've re-written the whole thing a couple times already and am still too afraid to submit it and get voted a Muggle or something. :(

Do you mean [livejournal.com profile] hogwartsishome? You don't have to be worried, I promise! =) People are rarely 'Muggled' there, from what I've seen, and it's a lot of fun!

HP, Percy Jackson, and Hunger Games?

Are you serious though? This is no different than any sports team/university intermurals/nationalism in some sense/etc. It's very human to want to belong to a team. It's downright neurological the way we like to label people in groups. Fandom's not alone in this, and you probably do it too in some way you can't recognize, one-dimensional labels and all.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This is precisely what I wanted to say. Rather than copy and paste this comment, I'm just going to say "this".

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's silly, but people in general can really care about things like group membership and community. It's probably not that different from what makes people want to identify with a certain style or subculture. Stuff like this is pretty silly and meaningless, but as long as it's not taken too seriously, it's also pretty innocent.

i absolutely agree

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well I like these kinds of things because I like imagining who I'd be if I was in the other world.

But, to each his or her own. IA that they're pretty stereotypical.

(This is the first I've heard of Hunger Games fandom doing this kind of thing, though. Does anyone know any good quizzes? Of course I'm super spoiled and would probably just be in the Capitol anyway...)

[identity profile] roguebelle.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Is it bad that my first thought wasn't a response to this secret at all, but instead was, "Wow, that's a really terrible District map"?
Edited 2012-01-14 05:22 (UTC)

[identity profile] l33tsaber.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't be as bad as me... I thought they were *voting* districts at first.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. I'm not involved in THG fandom, so I was basically relying on Google, but it didn't have many good ones.

[identity profile] trompelol.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I hope people don't actually ~sort themselves by District, beyond "I live in [state], so I'm located in Disctrict [x]."

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, I thought about that and then I realized Long Island would be underwater. :P glub, glub.

[identity profile] bamboo.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a sorting equivalent for Hunger Games? What do they base it on? Seems a bit weird.
