it's not just the height/weight ratio that bothers people, though: the crazy long limbs and sharp angles are impossible for non-deformed humans.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's more unsettling to me in the sample pic than anything else. The shoulders and joints are super pointy, to the point they're spiked-looking.

Well, there are a lot of particulars to the noodle-people CLAMP style that goes beyond tall and lanky into the physically impossible for humans. But I think it's exaggerated; there are very tall, very lanky people.
I don't particularly think the obesity crisis has made people see realistic bodies as unrealistic. Anime characters are drawings. They don't sync up with the average body type - including those at a healthy weight - even though some people may look like them. Typically the heads are the wrong size for the bodies, the eyes and noses are the wrong size for the face, breast size often incredibly large for the frame (which happens IRL but it's rarer and the anime characters rarely have floppyness or back problems; there's far more unrealistic gravity-defying perkiness and asynchronous bouncing), etc.
FWIW I really like the extreme stylized drawings in Code Geass and in most anime. But I'm not going to pretend they look real.

people don't mock the geass style for skinniness. it's the proportions. just look at the image of your secret. how many of his heads fit into his height?

...I refuse to believe this isn't a troll.

The problem with Geass' character designs for me has more to do with aesthetics than any kind of body weight issue. I mean, I have no problem with CLAMP's normal way of drawing people (very thin and tall, guys always have that inverted triangle torso with the super-wide shoulders), I know it's stylization and they aren't actually trying to represent reality. At the same time, Code Geass was not just CLAMP -- Takahiro Kimura was the one who actually adapted the character designs for animation.* This is the same guy who did the character designs for super robot shows like Godannar and Gaogaigar, which most people probably aren't familiar with, but they have a lot of voluptous women with big breasts and "manly" looking men, and that combined with CLAMP's style just doesn't work from an aesthetic perspective. You can't just take a typical CLAMP noodle person with the stick figure body and slap some breasts and hips on them and expect it to look normal, it just looks fucked up

oh dude they're just like barbie dolls

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Is this for real?

What about part where you don't need to project because you actually look like a human.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
You're right and you're wrong. I think I've had this discussion five times recently: people come in all shapes and sizes. Those who do not fit the creator's design complain that the design is unrealistic, then someone who does complains that their body type is being marginalized.

That's it. You really don't need to try to blame it on the modeling industry (if you are shorter and heavier than the design), the obesity epidemic (if you are taller and thinner), or Hollywood (if your chest to waist ratio is different). You don't need to say that the depictions are causing eating disorders or encouraging breast implants, or anything. Someone out there looks the way the art does.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's the fact that they all look like Slenderman that bothers people, OP.

[identity profile] tamabonotchi.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a case of 'being anatomically-correct doesn't matter they look cool' just like CLAMP's style.
I don't mind how the characters were drawn, but it was so obvious everyone points it out.

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
My brother had a BMI of 15 - seriously underweight despite being healthy (he eventually hit "normal" weight by age 30). He still wasn't 10 heads high with eyes half the size of his face. I don't really care about the art style, though, because they're not meant to be real people. What bothers me is when real people are mocked or shamed for not looking like that.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem is you're comparing yourself to characters who were intentionally drawn disproportionate. It's a bit unrealistic, no?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
If you seriously look as disproportionate as they do, you've got way bigger problems than people bashing characters you project onto.
Might want to see a doctor ASAP.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm just gonna keep thinking that art style is fucking foul, with its freakish spider hands and 11 foot tall men and 8 inch waists and pointy eyes and pointy chins and pointy slit/snout noses and pointy everything.

YOU UGLY, CODE GEASS ART STYLE. YOU SO UGLY.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
AN ANIME SERIES W/NON-REALISTIC ARTWORK? OMG TO WHOM CAN WE REPORT THIS HORRIBLE, UNPRECEDENTED EVENT?? QUICK GET DAVINCI ON THE HORN.

Feels to me like you just wanted attention about your proportions, you special little snowflake.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I dislike the CG style because practically everyone looks the same and the proportions are off, disregarding the fact everyone looks skinny and there's almost no differences in the characters' individual weight or body type.

I HAVE seen actual guys who look like Lelouche does in that picture. It was horrifying. It made me want to buy them a sandwich.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that there are people with long-limbed, tall, and thin body types doesn't mean that it makes any sense for a show to have everyone with that exact body type. That may be a part of why people make fun of it or have a problem with it. It's not a personal attack on your body image. In fact, I would go as far as to assume a body type with those three things at once is not common at all.

When every character has that CLAMP look it just emphasizes how disproportionate and unnatural it is, and it becomes creepy like your watching a show full of slendermen.
