...I think today is just a bad day for me, 'cuz I'm just not getting it, lol. |D I mean, I've read/watched DN, and I've watched Blade Runner, but it's not clicking to me. :)

Explaining the joke:

In the Japanese version of Death Note, the unknown murderer is called "Kira" because they're calling him "Killer" in gratuitous English... but a Japanese accent will often transpose R and L sounds. In the English dub of Death Note, they tried to be true to what is supposed to be in gratuitous English versus what is supposed to be Japanese, with names like "Light" being proper instead of "Raito" and "Ryuk" being proper instead of "Luke." What I'm guessing the OP found funny is that even in the English dub, they call him "Kira" instead of "Killer," and are therefore (somewhat nonsensically) calling attention to the Japanese accent business.

The Blade Runer background is in reference to above-linked clip from Blade Runner, where the Japanese translator is saying "Brade Runner," so OP is saying both Death Note and Blade Runner have that silly "Engrish" in them and it's stupid/funny/etc.

*fuuuuck, the guy in Blade Runner is Chinese. But the Asian stereotype with the R and L is still the same, that was the point. Fail on me.

Wait, where did the "Luke" thing for Ryuk come from? I've never seen that before, and that's not how I would write Luke in Japanese...

I wouldn't know exactly where it started, but I've seen it in a lot of fics and forums. I always assumed it had some legit source in the Japanese, but I guess it just came from those who watched DN in Japanese and misinterpreted the sound, or those who only read the scanlations?
