While fanfiction is not srs bzns, it's still nice to be consistent with canon unless the fic is marked as AU. If you're just making shit up without bothering to create an AU situation, you're probably sacrificing characterization for your story, which isn't fun to read.

I really don't get the logic of this. Anything any fic writer writes deviates from canon. So no matter what they're writing, they're "just making shit up".

Of course any fanfic deviates from canon somewhat. Since the OP mentioned character backstories, I'm talking specifically about deviating from things learned about a character in canon.

For example, if canon tells us Bob is 27 and was born on a farm in Kansas, but the author doesn't like that and makes something else up to fit their story, unless it's an AU where the characters are lawyers in NYC or something, then what's the point? Why not stick with canon and let Bob be 27 and from Kansas?

Ultimately, do what you want to, though. I'm not actually the fanfic police and my life will go on.

Yeah, but if there's no canon to draw from, I think it makes sense for people to make it up, even if it's jossed later on. I'm not big on fanon either, but sometimes it makes sense to bridge gaps in canon.
