Decent parenting would be allowing her to have an interest in humans.

Humans killed his wife. Humans had done more harm to him than even Ursula. Do you think that if a random human had found a mermaid they won't have sold her to the highest bidder, displayed her, and then dissected her after an early demise? That's before they searched for the rest of her species, which Ariel was risking every time she willingly risked being spotted to sneak a peek or add another item to her collection.

Different anon here.

Do you think that if a random human had found a mermaid they won't have sold her to the highest bidder, displayed her, and then dissected her after an early demise?

The whole point of the movie is that Eric didn't do that, though, and Triton ASSUMED HE WOULD. Eric even ended up saving Triton and Ariel's life from Ursula. Plus, Triton had the ability the entire time to turn Ariel human. He just had no idea how MUCH she wanted to be human (because, really, he honestly didn't seem to spend that much time with her).

That's before they searched for the rest of her species

Where did this even happen? Am I missing something?

SA, just clarifying:

Plus, Triton had the ability the entire time to turn Ariel human, which would have made it safer for her to live in the human world.

Because it's a Disney movie. How the hell was Triton supposed to know that the one human Ariel met first would be a literal prince charming? The point was that if Triton was acting realistically, he'd think that a person wasn't going to be a perfect prince to an otherworldly creature when profit and fame was to be had. If a given person found a mermaid at the time, it's going to get out. And humans would have gone looking for others of it's kind. By exposing herself to the view of humans Ariel was exposing every other mermaid to the whims of mankind.

You're also forgetting that Ariel is his daughter, as well as a princess who had obligations. Would you turn your daughter into a fish on a whim because she'd be less likely to drown that way?

Ursula didn't do as much harm because she had nothing to use against him. With Ariel's contract in tow, she intended to hurt Triton and his family much more than humans had. And in real life, that's what humans would have done, but in this movie, when her tail came out, there was shock, but no one moved to dissect her.

I'm not saying that Ariel's actions weren't risky. But Triton's reaction was not justified. It only steered her into more danger.
