Hm... but I took a look at this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_abuse

Several studies have argued that, unlike physical and sexual maltreatment, an isolated incident does not constitute emotional abuse. Tomison and Tucci write, "emotional abuse is characterised by a climate or pattern of behaviour(s) occurring over time [...] Thus, 'sustained' and 'repetitive' are the crucial components of any definition of emotional abuse."[6] Andrew Vachss, an author, attorney and former sex crimes investigator, defines emotional abuse as "the systematic diminishment of another. It may be intentional or subconscious (or both), but it is always a course of conduct, not a single event."[7]

Doesn't seem that there's 100% consensus on this, but it seems like the majority opinion is that abuse of this kind means a pattern, not an isolated event. Also, I've seen a couple write-ups of abuse that say that abusers abuse because they gain something from it -- a feeling of power, satisfaction, etc. Of course, other interpretations are valid, but my interpretation is that

1) this was an isolated event. Triton didn't seem all that involved with the parenting of Ariel, considering how he didn't know about her hobbies and Sebastian seemed to know more about Ariel's behavior than he did. I feel like this event was uniquely traumatizing and there wasn't a history. There is room for an alternate interpretation, though. I'm not considering sequels or the TV series.

2) Triton didn't abuse his power in order to get some kind of gratification from it. Instead it seemed like after the incident he felt *worse* (shocked that he went that far, guilt, etc.). This doesn't seem to me to mesh well with a typical abusive relationship.

That said, I think I've written fic where Triton was abusive. I don't think that interpretation is that far out there, but I think from what we see in the movie, I wouldn't call it abuse, just trauma.

Fair enough, though the fact that she's not allowed to leave the house without a chaperon at the age of 16 strikes me as controlling behavior, to say the least.
