22. Fandom isn't about religion, its about having fun, why take it seriously enough to argue over the Catholic religion's politics?

[identity profile] sevendials.livejournal.com 2007-07-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, speaking entirely personally, my own favorite character is a lapsed Catholic (which means he's not even terribly good at being a Catholic, still less an actual priest) and I took his religion seriously enough to do a bit of low-level research into what the Hell the boy had actually been brought up believing. I found that fun. Thinking that fan writers should respect a character's belief system and liking a little bit of realism in fanfiction doesn't necessarily make an individual a killjoy.

Is there something inherantly wrong with people taking the things they like seriously?

The context of the secret implies that she hates the entire fandom because it doesn't follow Catholic politics, and that does kind of make them a killjoy. So what if they don't take his/her religion seriously in fandom? Its a fictional series surrounding vampires--chances are people are going to pair characters together because its their preference.

I see nothing wrong with taking religion to heart, but seriously, you can't dictate an entire fandom and it's pairings because it just-so-happens to include religion as a part of the plot.

My feeling was that the secret made a reasonable point - shipping characters who have made a profession out of their religion and whose religion specifically prohibits them from getting it on, or even from making friends with their hands, with no thought as to the implication for their belief systems is somewhat unrealistic - in an unreasonable way. I personally would not have stated that I thought less of people for writing shipfic or that the entire fandom was somehow stupid for doing so.

The fact that the series is about vampires and is set in a universe that's considerably more fantasical than our own isn't, to my mind, a watertight excuse for utterly disregarding central tenets of religious doctrine, though. Yeah, the Trinity Blood universe is weird and the Church isn't quite doing what it would be over here, but it still seems reasonable (or at least it does to a fandom outsider like myself) to assume that the faith is at least still recognizable as Catholicism. If the characters weren't at least supposed to be celibate, they might as well be High Church Anglicans. I wouldn't go so far as the secret poster and say anyone who shipped the characters anyway was daft for doing so, but I would consider that the best thing to do would be to at least acknowledge the elephant in the room instead of trying to pretend it didn't exist.

OH WELL, WHO CARES.

Elephants are cute. \:D/

Thank you.

Being celibate is a important part of priesthood, so it pisses me off how all these fans are blatantly ignoring this, and making Abel and Tres/Esther/Insert Character Here fuck each other like bunnies in the Pope's room and not feel guilty about it.

They would at least be ashamed of their homosexuality/feelings/cravings because of the way they have been taught by the church. So Abel being happy-go-lucky about fucking Tres just doesn't seem right to me.

one of my favourite characters is a templar knight. Who has a total breakdown of faith due to a heretic woman, and goes into a monastery, even though he isn't even THAT religious he's just hiding from his own confusion about doubting his faith. And the whole book is hugely homoerotic too, with the main character, who was his squire then joined the monastery with him because they couldn't bear to be apart. The fanfiction of this will be really interesting, I think. The two main characters act like they're totally in love and don't realise it yet, or try to hide it anyway. Total total obsession over each other and jealousy and fierce protection and hand touching and hair stroking and noticing muscles and thinking the other is good looking, etc... and then more general obsession. :P
I have no idea how the author didn't notice. But the slash for it is going to be SO much fun. :D

Intriguing. What book is this?

Also, if there's one thing anime can teach us, it's that the main difference between Catholics and Protestants is their method for fighting vampires.

Sorry for the delay, I was away. The 'Pagan' series by Catherine Jinks. Pagan is the name of the main character/narrator. :)

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-07-06 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
oh and of course we'll have to not ignore their religion in it.
