Well, the racist issues are kinda right on the surface for these two; that's totally part of it. So...you know, as long as it's dealt with and not just ignored (like, if you make Daryl totally unracist because he likes this one guy, that's weird), then it works.

Except..When has Daryl every been racist?

Well he does call Glenn a Chinaman which is, if not outright racist, at least insensitive since Glenn is Korean.

...Trust me, that is outright racist.

"got some balls for a chinaman" is an incredibly cruel and racist sentiment. the idea of the weak and cowardly asian male is a very strong and ugly stereotype. i like daryl but he has some problematic elements to say the least.

I get your concern, but has anybody even focused on Glenn's ethnicity in the show? It's like - a total non issue at this point, except for some remarks by Daryl's brother.

I'm not reading any fic, but i hope they follow canon on that.

Most of the Daryl/Glenn fic I have read unfortunately does make Glenn into ~that~ Asian guy.

The kinkmeme is full of prompts like "someone fucks the chink out of him" and Glenn is even referred to as "the Asian" or "the chink" in the narrative and I cannot tell you how many times people have written Daryl calling Glenn racial slurs as pet names that Glenn thinks are cute and romantic.

Glenn's ethnicity gets pretty fetishized in Daryl/Glenn, sorry to say.

I've never watched the show (never got far into the comics either).... But /really/?? People seriously use those fuckin' words?? Is it a thing the character says?

Jeeeezus. Even if it's "in character", why don't people get that using chink is just as offensive as "ni***r"? (in a work of fiction dealing with racist characters, obviously using whatever words they want to... but its diff when a person, not a character, uses that...)

Sadly a lot of people seem to be ignorant about this sort of thing. There was a recent bit of racefail involving a Papa John's employee referring to an Asian customer as "lady chinky eyes", and someone was trying to defend the use of the word "chink/chinky" by saying that it wasn't offensive, it was just stating facts and no different than describing a customer as "the black man." Um, yeah. Not really. It'd be more comparable to describing a black customer as "the n****r."

It's not just as offensive as nigger though.

That word has a specific, incredibly powerful history that differs from that of chink.

That doesn't make the latter okay or acceptable, but jesus christ everything bad is not exactly the same.

Let me codify this by saying I'm not into playing the old privilege olympics, not at all. And yet, here I am...

I am asian american, and this for me, is the most offensive word used to attack me for my race (apart from maybe zipperheads, but no one even remembers that anymore, thank god).

This is an english word used to put down a minority in the english-speaking language community. I know in different communities/places the connotations are different- but that's true for every derogatory word. Do light skin asians have it "better off" than dark skinned people in the places this word is used? Possibly, probably. I'm not here to debate that. I don't think that makes the use of the word, itself, any less fuckin offensive.

ALL non-whites have it harder in english speaking community. "Since black people have it harder than asians, it's okay to say chink, take 'em down a notch." That's what I feel like you're saying. And that's not the way I see it.

In this context (the phrase, to fuck the _____ out of someone), do you really think it's less offensive? Like, to the point where you'd let that slide, but if it was n____ you'd get offended?

Anyway, yeah, stickin' to my guns on this one.

daryl/glenn would have to be handled with veeeerry delicate gloves and i say that as a shipper, hah.
