I feel the same way about the Supernatural fandom. IDC if it's meant to be "tongue in cheek", characters like Becky and jokes about conventions aren't funny to me. Because it just makes me feel like I'm once again being laughed at for having an interest in fandom, as though it's a hobby that deserves to be laughed at :(

It's the Supernatural fandom. It kinda demands to be laughed at.

No, it doesn't. All fandoms have some crazies; that does not mean all fans are crazy.

I didn't say all the fans were crazy. In fact, the small voices of reason trying to beg people not to be so utterly batshit are often the best part. The 'Straight Man' is often what makes a comedic act extra funny.

Drive by icon love ... <3 @ Ainley. =)

I kind of agree? I mean, SPN fandom gets a bad portrayal and yes some loud fans are indeed a bit... obsessive, but the whole Becky thing... I don't know. It was funny when she first appeared but now that they kept dragging the joke on and kept making Becky more and more delusional and on the bad side of crazy, it really got a bit bad.

Then I think of what the actors must face sometimes when faced with said crazy fans who are shameless about flaunting their wincest fanart hardcore sex positions in their face and I kind of feel like they're entitled to.

I haven't seen anything that mocking of fandom in the Sherlock fandom (yet) though? Or maybe I just haven't been paying close enough attention.

I dunno, that's not what I get from it. It feels like affectionate ribbing most of the time to me. Like 'you guys are passionate and loyal and you're the reason we all still have jobs [because lbr, it is]--and you're also sometimes fucking insane and we're gonna point that out too.' Which I think is a fair exchange, especially since they make fun of themselves as well, i.e., "The French Mistake." I did think Becky's character had sort of an embarrassing resolution, but I assume she was meant to be pretty exaggerated, not an example of an average fan.

This, exactly.

See, this is how I feel about SPN's relationship with fandom. The jokes and even Becky are just a bit of lighthearted teasing from the show itself.

Think of it like this--how many SPN fics have you read where a couple of Sam or Dean's character details were exaggerated to the limits? I see this a lot with angst fics (which is probably why I don't read many of them). I'm left wondering how the boys find time to hunt monsters when they spend all day crying on one another's shoulders. But that is exactly what Becky is to fandom--an exaggeration. Becky is just an original character for the fandom of SPN's fandom.

I hate hate hate hate when Supernatural acknowledges fandom. It's for the fans, it's not for you. Stop putting it into the show. The idea of the show being a book series was funny at first but when they went to the fanfic and Wincest in the same episode I was so done (and I don't even like Wincest). Becky was never funny to me and the more she pops up the more I hate her and what the show says about fandom.

To each their own - i've never felt that way about how SPN treats fans and fandom at all.

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
I can see why you'd feel hurt by the jokes, especially since they're coming from the very thing you've enjoyed and devoted yourself to. It's like you took up an instrument and it came to life to tell you you're a nerd and you'll never get laid. But I can also see it from (what I imagine is) their point of view. I remember when I first watched an interview with Jared and Jensen, I was overwhelmed by the sense of how... utterly ordinary they seemed. I don't mean that as an insult to them or to fandom, just... to me they seemed like caricatures of what you'd imagine "normal" to be. Meaning I thought that maybe they'd have a harder time than most coming to terms with fandom, not to mention SPN fandom in all its majesty. I imagine it's possible that at times they've felt hounded, felt unsafe, and felt put on a pedestal they don't deserve. They seem like really decent guys, so I don't think they'd want to be worshipped. I can see them being uncomfortable, and this being a way to try to deal with that, not as a stab against anyone. *shrug* But that's just what I imagine when I watch those episodes. I don't think Becky is meant to represent every SPN fan ever, just an example of an extreme, which does exist.

)AND, until the most recent episode, Becky was portrayed fairly positively, too. They found Becky off-putting, true, but she's also a big part of why they ended the Apocalypse (she's the reason they found Crowley and got the Colt. Even though the gun didn't work on the devil, in the bad future they were still looking for it to shoot the devil with, and without Crowley they'd have never found Death.)

Basically, her character said "Sometimes some of you scare us, but ultimately we love you" to the fandom.
