I'm guessing this is maybe related to what Mark Gakiss said about the slash?

Here's the quote:

"[…] What’s amazing is, it doesn’t matter how many times you say they’re not going to kiss, they’re not together, they love each other but that’s the point, it’s the single most imperishable friendship in the whole of English literature that’s the way it works, it’s totally unspoken that they love each other in a way that men can do but they’re not gay for each other. But it doesn’t matter how many times you say that, an entire forest of dirty fiction has arisen as a result. And long may it continue, I don’t know what it’s about… [laugh]
[…] I’m very aware of it [slash fiction]. God I’m aware of it because people come and talk about it everytime we do any kind of event but I supposed the history of it is going way back, I think it started with Kirk and Spock. Anything like that has a kind of slash element and it’s an interesting thing because you’re brought up on the idea that heterosexual men get off on the notion of lesbians but the flip side of it is just as powerful, particularly I think for girls of a certain age. The idea of two sexy men getting it on is a really powerful aphrodisiac."

I'm not in the fandom and I don't even *have* Tumblr, and I *still* felt the backlash.

I am in the fandom and I do read Sherlock/John fics, but I don't see the big deal with this? He is you know telling the truth...

*runs and hides*

Also in the fandom, and I totally agree with you. 'And long may it continue' isn't exactly a condemnation.

And even if it was, I doubt I would care much. They've put the characters out there, and regardless their intention, everyone who watches is going to have their own interpretation. This isn't exactly news. In fact, entire academic fields are devoted to this very fact.

I think it might come from where he's saying 'No matter how many times you tell people...' bit? I could see that coming off as being irritated by it, particularly since he does mention that people come up and talk to him about it at every event.

IDK, though. I'm not actually in the fandom so I don't have much of a context to go on.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
IDK, I guess I would interpret it more as Gatiss acknowledging that people will read what they will into your material no matter what you tell them.

But yeah, see? Even a simple interview is completely open to different interpretations. ;)

LOL yeah, as soon as they release the final product into ~the wild~ it stops being their own - at least in terms of interpretation.

Doesn't sound like he's being much of a dick about it though.

And anyways it's not like fandom curr about his opinions, they'll prob just up the slash even more.

Actually he sounds like he's in awe. Forest of dirty fics indeed.

Whatever fans have wanted out of the Holmes/Watson relationship for ages...it was never consumated(either because ACD couldn't have written it as such or didn't want to). Moffat and Co. are sticking to canon(so far). There's nothing wrong with this.

He outright states that people bring his attention to the porn at "events". How is it "backlash" to feel creeped out when someone hands him fic and ask how he likes it when people write about him and others screwing his co-workers?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
First anon:

I meant "backlash" from the fans - I got the impression that many thought the "girls of a certain age" comment was condescending.

From Gatkiss though, I just get the feeling he's rather bemused by it all.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Setting aside the "girls of a certain age" thing, that seems pretty decent to me. The comments about how THEY'RE NOT GAY, HOW DARE YOU THINK THEY'RE GAY are annoying, but for the most part I've only seen people involved saying fans can see more than subtext if they want but they aren't lovers.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
"girls of a certain age!"? Yeah, um, Mark, honey, fifty plus here and slashing away merrily. You'll understand when you're older.

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
But at least it's not someone who considers that you're too old to be into fandom if you're out of college ;)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think one of the problems with this may be the "it doesn't matter how many times you say..." because it can be taken to indicate that the fans can't separate fanon from canon. That just because they write it they must believe it to be true... that they don't "get it" however many times it is explained to them. I'm not in this particular fandom, but I happily slash people on different shows without believing that it to be the "truth".

[identity profile] htebazytook.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
.................This quote is anti-fandom/slash how?

You guys, we can have our fandom fun, but the creators are ultimately in charge. They're allowed to do whatever they want with THEIR SHOW and aren't beholden to cater to our whims - that is what fic is for
