This. One thing being in Japan will show you, the rest of us really are secondary or even lower in their view of the world. The stories they tell are from their own perspective unless specifically qualified to be otherwise. Like anime? Great, but they'll keep catering to the local audience first and foremost. Gaijin fans and money are welcome but our opinion isn't all that important.

and honestly, you don't even have to go to japan to realize this. when i was in high school, i did a paper about anime and i had the ignorant idea that 1) america was copying japan 2) thanks to some "friends", japan wants to look white.

once i actually did some research about it (back in the early days of the internet), i learned that those notions are wrong wrong wrong especially so since i also found out that the hair/eye color doesn't even matter in the story unless it's somehow relevant. in fact, i found out that the hair color actually represents a character's personality more outwardly than anything else.

and being in america, this culture tried to teach me that we are what everyone strives to be and i realized, thankfully at an early age, that's not only fucking selfish and self-centered but it's also very ignorant and i was pretty sure japan didn't care what a 15 year old hispanic american teenager thought about yaoi.
