I think it could be that both majority of yaoi and yuri are aimed at female audiences. Not that gender should affect anyone's reading preferences, but having things advertised at specifically not-you does create an additional threshold.

And as others have said, social pressures and the fact that shipping seems to be more popular with females.

The vast majority of yuri is aimed at males. The only female oriented yuri I've read is Mars no Kiss.

Alright, I must have been reading a very limited selection, then. Most of the yuri/girls' love I've read has been shoujo/josei so that has skewed my views. Pardon me.

Really? I'm gonna have to ask for recs, because that's right up my alley. I'm tired of moe tropes in male oriented yuri.

Sure thing! First things to come to mind:
Kiriko Nananan: Blue & Water
Takako Shimura: Aoi hana (I also really like her Wandering Son which handles transgender topics, though I guess it's technically seinen)
Yamaji Ebine: Indigo Blue & Sweet Lovin' Baby & Free Soul
Takeuchi Sachiko: Honey & Honey (autobiographical)
Hiyori Otsu: Clover & Mizuiro Cinema
Nanae Haruno: Pietà & Double House (also transgender themes)
Minami Q-ta: Not All Chicks Are Retards & several short stories

Those are some of my favourites. :) Most of them can be found on lililicious.

I've actually read several of those! I guess I'd forgotten. Thank you, I'll check the others out.

AoiHana is seinen, serialized in MangaEroticsF.

Alright, sorry about that. I saw it being described as just Romance/Drama/Slice-of-life/Shoujo-ai so I wasn't quite sure. I'd nevertheless rec it for someone tired of the most blatant tropes of male-oriented yuri, since, even though it features some very common character types, I think the relationships and the characters are quite bittersweetly touching, deep and realistic. (At least from my personal experience as a queer woman.)

(same anon)

Actually, I looked this up, and it would appear that yuri has originated as shoujo/josei and nowadays has also crossed over to shounen/seinen. So it would appear that it's not firmly either, as a genre. Separate works of course fall under specific categories.

Mars no Kiss! <3

What are you talking about? The readership of Yuri-Hime (the magazine) is 85% female.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It might be so, but it's not the only yuri magazine, is it? Whether you (and I) like it or not, most yuri is categorized as seinen.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There are only 2 yuri-focused magazines:

YuriHime (jousei)
Tsubomi (seinen)

And I don't think the balance is actually tipped towards either of them. There isn't that much yuri manga, anyway.
