Yes, it does depend on the fandom. I'm an X-Men fan, most comic book fans, X-Men fans included, are guys. When you go to look for fan art or fics, you'll find most slash couples are written and drawn by females, and most femmslash, by males. But, if you ask around, there are same-sex couples most male fans are pretty sure are canon, even if not specifically said so in canon. Professor X/Magneto, for example. And most are pretty sure Wolverine is bi.

Of course, it might just be because X-Men is very LGTBQA oriented, but it just emphasizes my point. It depends on the fandom.
