Aside from what a lot of others have said here, yaoi is written FOR women, to appeal TO women. Bara (someone correct me if I get something wrong, here) is written for men. I don't think I've yet to find a translated bara manga locally, but if I understand correctly, I think they avoid a lot of the tropes yaoi is notorious for. I believe they're less romanticized and more... I'm not sure gritty is the word... They tend to feature more [commonly] realistic men, not pretty femboy bishounen.

So. TL:DR; Target audience, yaoi found its.

(I have a handful of guy friends that own up to sometimes enjoying yaoi. I have one girl friend I can think of that's ever mentioned reading yuri. SHE is gay.)

As a bara fanboy, realistic? LOL no, not really but it is more male oriented in a way that it is more porn-oriented than "relationship". Like most yaoi is.
