but... since friendship is magic, like you said, wouldn't that mean her element is friendship? :|a I always thought was the implication and they were just being clever.

This, with a side of "people CARE about the elements-of-harmony plot?!" to go along with.

No, honestly, I did not know.

A major boon to this theory is the Discord-inverted Twilight in The Return of Harmony part 2.

The other ponies started demonstrating the opposite of their element, such as Rarity becoming greedy, Applejack being unable to tell the truth, and Rainbow Dash deserting her friends.

When Twilight goes greyscale, she ends up wanting to be rid of her friends, therefore exhibiting the opposite of friendship, implying that was the true meaning of the element of Magic.

Ditto this. I was pretty sure that was the implication... they all had the elements of harmony, and Twilight's part was to bring them all together with Friendship.

Yes exactly, this was my thought too. The show isn't My Little Pony: Magic is a component of Friendship.

I always thought it sounded kinda silly too.

It is silly. :P But "the magic that brings everypony together" would be a mouthful for one element.

IA but I don't think that having her element be friendship would work either. Like magic, it's not strictly a personality trait and having one pony personify "friendship" would make the other 5 seem unimportant.

There's a fanfic I'm reading (if you like good twilight fic with a helping of Discord *not sure if it'll be a ship fic or not, but..*, look up Dicordant Feelings on ff.net) and the author has pretty much called her element the Element of Magic and Friendship. Just like lovegonnadrown has said, Friendship IS Magic, thus, she's the Element of Friendship. She just has an affinity for magic as is as well.

TIL... there's a pony called Twilight Sparkle. lol

The animators made her sparkle in the sun as a joke too in one ep, jsyk. XD

I like the way you think, OP.

I would note that her cutie mark incorporates a star for each of her friends. In addition, she is a dedicated student of magic, and her academic life is just as important to her identity as farming is to Applejack, or celebration is to Pinkie Pie, or flying is to Rainbow Dash.

Honestly, my issue is more that she didn't really even *understand* friendship at the time they got their elements [wasn't that part of the reason she was told to leave the palace in the first place?]. So it makes no sense for her element [doing the friendship = magic, so twilight's element is friendship thing] to be something that she doesn't really have any experience with, or 'get'...plus it isn't a personality trait.

That said, it's really not something that's worth worrying over OP.

...Maybe it's just me, but could it be the "magic" in this case is the special spark someone has that draws people to them? The "magic" of being able to make friends wherever one goes?

Yeah, this has always bothered me too.

Though I admit I'm probably butthurt since Twilight is my favorite. (She's basically me in pony form.) All the other ponies get acknowledged for their personality traits, and Twilight only gets acknowledged for what she can do, not who she is. It's almost like it implies that her only worth is her magical ability.

It seems, though, like Twilight's positive traits that make her a good friend are either already-taken elements of harmony (such as kindness) or a manifestation of her place as the sixth and final element (being a leader, being the glue that holds the other ponies together and resolving disputes between them). Another positive trait she has is her intelligence and studiousness, but those aren't really good for friendship, except that her magical ability comes in large part from her intelligence and studies and hard work.

I am only reminded of this, since we're talking about elements being wrong:

I mean, what's kept me sane is the fact that friendship IS magic, but I really wish they would address that in the show! like "Yes, FRIENDSHIP is her element and its whats holding them all together, not just magic" or something more cleverly written @__@

But at the same time though, I feel like that'd get rid of the "elements of harmony" plot all together, and honestly I crave plot :I (Not "that" kind of "plot"...but you know what I mean!)
