What's your favorite pairing? Sometimes, just being vocal about a rare ship can lead to running into a fellow fan -- who might be more than willing to write fic once s/he knows someone out there is actually interested in reading them.

Otherwise, there's always things like Yuletide...?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-18 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could say, but I'm the only person writing for the fandom (let alone the pairing), and a quick google search would make it pretty obvious who I was (as much as "lol obvious poster is obvious!" secrets annoy me). I left kudos on the author's fic, so if they saw this and saw my AO3 profile, "why has this person who seemingly has no interest in this fandom left kudos on my story...?" it'd be sort of... awkward...

Yeah, there's things like that. I'm really bad at writing fic to a time limit though so I've never got in on Yuletide, but it doesn't stop me considering it every year. For the sake of the non-fandom...!

[identity profile] errantnarwhal.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Does that really work though? I mean, unless you find fics with characters that have similar personalities and physical traits as the pairing you crave, I can't imagine it's very satisfying...

But yeah, you're right about that being an undesirable comment to receive. "Man, you write the characters so blandly that I can easily just insert other characters in their place. A+"

but then I guess if it's just straight up porn with no plot, maybe the characterization isn't important anyway...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-18 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
This one wasn't too bad in fact, although it took a lot of searching in the first place to find something that fit. The pairing they used was kind of similar to mine and as you say, it was mostly porn. More satisfying at least than reading the 0 fic/s that currently exist for the pairing I like.

[identity profile] shukivengeance.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
What's stopping you from leaving a supportive comment without mentioning you edited the work?

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I thought about doing that but it seems rather insincere, especially if they ask you if you thought the characters were IC.

[identity profile] shukivengeance.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see how it would seem insincere, especially if your appreciation for the skill in the writing is what you focus on. Plenty of secrets here have made it clear that a lot of writers are desperate for some sort of feedback or recognition, and if they were to ask something like if you thought they were IC it's easy enough to dodge that kind of question or make it not the focus of your response.

So just leave kudos. You said you were reading on AO3.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP.

you could just stop after "your girl porn was hot", you know.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-18 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I've done this with pairings within the same fandom. And most of the time I'm genuinely surprised that it works so often.

I don't know what that says about fandom fic, though....

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
And most of the time I'm genuinely surprised that it works so often.

i'm not, tbh. there are some archetypes that fandom really loves, to the point where some characters who don't exactly fit are bent until they do. and if you're in it just for the porn, there are some standard popular character dynamics as well.

plus the everyone is sassy and speaks like they belong in a whedon show thing, depending on your neck of the fan-wood.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've been doing this for years. I even searched/replaced eye color and hair color to make a story relevant to my favorite character. It ranged from doing it within a fandom (changing pairing) to even between fandoms (a fandom I wasn't familiar with could provide me with the smut for the pairing I preferred.) It might be a dick move but like you OP, I sometimes got desperate.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I've never done it but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Leaving a comment about it might be unwise if it sounds like "Your fic was so generic!" but if you're just messing around with the fic on your own computer, I fail to see why that would be a dick move.

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
When one of my pairings I love are really rare, I start making fan works and post them up on place I know people will see.

It works.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I do that too and yes, it works!

Yeah, generate interest! I once gave my roommate a copy of a book I really love so she can draw fanart for me. :S

(Anonymous) 2012-01-18 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I've definitely been doing what I can as much as I can, but sometimes you just want to read a fic that you didn't have to write yourself, you know? For once. Or read something about my OTP that I find difficult to write, or that sort of thing.

I keep holding out hope that it'll work... sometimes I worry I'm just annoying people with it, though.

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2012-01-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
What's the couple? Now I'm interested. But do as much as you can. Sometimes, it takes awhile. It took a forever for IshiRuki to have some acknowledgment for me. It took a few fics, some icons and fanart to get noticed.

Sadly, most of my couples are crack. lol

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
i love this secret, op. jsyk.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-18 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
lol I do the same thing. Desperate times call for desperate measures! I only run into problems when the names are also common words and get replaced

(Anonymous) 2012-01-18 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to do that when I was vehemently anti Harry/Ginny Ron/Hermione. I swapped all instances of Ginny and Hermione's names. As you can guess, it turned out TERRIBLY.

[identity profile] carolion.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
a compliment is a compliment. i write for an obscure/defunct pairing but i'd be stoked if someone said "hey, I don't ship it, but damn this was hot!" to me! i mean, i try to take some pride in my work and inject a lot of personality and development and characterization into my fics, but if someone takes the time to read something i write even when they don't ship it... i think that's great :D

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Curious as to the fandom. I am having exactly the same lack-of-fic (well, entire lack of fandom) problem now with one of my newest discoveries (the DC comic All-Star Western), so I know that feel.
