SOPA blackout is going down tomorrow (18th) on Wikipedia, Failblog, Reddit and a couple others. Just wondering what FS thinks about it.

At first I didn't really see what it would accomplish, but on further thinking I see what they're doing. I don't know if SOPA would be as extreme to censor the internet to the point that it becomes like Nintendo wi-fi where the only communication you can have is through per-determinded speech bubbles, but it'd be a lot less fun. This community might even have to die because of the use of copyright material in the secrets if LJ didn't want to pay up the fines. And I honestly don't think the amount of piracy that goes on outweighs the amount of clever creativity people use copyrighted material in their works. I was browsing YouTube and realized that 90% of the things I'm watching wouldn't be able to be published. They're weren't harming anyone and actually did the opposite, it's free advertisement. I pretty much bought Skyrim after seeing all the jokes and crap about it and thought it might be a pretty cool game to play now as opposed to waiting a year or two when it's much cheaper.

I'm glad to hear there's been a delay on the bill, but it's disheartening to know the threat will still (and probably always) be there.

See, I'm Canadian, so I'm mainly watching in horror and scrolling past posts, saying I'm HEARTLESS IF I SCROLL PAST, GO CONTACT MY SENATOR. It's scary, but I have no idea what non-Americans are supposed to do about it.

I have no idea what you could do about it, either, but thanks for caring. Maybe if the government sees enough of people in other countries going "WTF, America is crazy!" it will have a little bit of an effect?

Actually, most everyone I know who only uses the internet casually had never even heard about SOPA before Google and Wikipedia started advertising the blackout. My mom just e-mailed me today like, "What is this SOPA thing?" so it was a good chance for me to give her a better idea of what's going on and why it could problematic.

The thing that bothers me is all the letters people are getting back from their senators basically saying, "Well, yeah, it leaves loopholes open to abuse that power that you could drive a fucking parade through, but the government would never do that! Just trust us!" How am I supposed to trust a government that doesn't even seem to want to listen?

Ugh, man, sorry for the ranting. I've always been pretty optimistic naive and just assumed the American government really cared about my opinion, but all this SOPA business has pretty much popped that bubble.

The government? Caring? Man, I used to think that when I was in second grade. Then I started actually paying attention to politics. It crushed my soul.
