Oh, anon. Me too.

I want the fucked up Guinevere/Lancelot sex magic PWPs, I want the Galahad/Derfel brother in arms epics, I want Nimue/Derfel, I want Nimue/Merlin, I want tearful angsty epic Arthur/Guinevere reunions. The AU where Derfel was raised a Saxon. The AU where Nimue was never raped and mutilated. The AU where Derfel never rescued her from the Isle. The MODERN AU. The one where Derfel saved his daughter. The one where Arthur married Ceinwyn. The Sagramor character studies, because JFC, how fantastic was he? I want it all.

I genuinely think these books are the best iteration of King Arthur that's been done in the last fifty years. And, like, don't get me wrong, I'm fond of Merlin, but putting Colin Morgan and Bradley James aside, this fandom would be SO MUCH MORE AWESOME.

I just recently discovered this version and have been looking into getting a copy. Somehow in all my years of reading Bernard Cornwell I never knew he'd written an Arthurian series! Sometimes life has good surprises. :)

DA, but I read the whole series and didn't like it. It was like they'd sucked all the magic out of the Arthur mythos and replaced it with a grotesque rotting corpse.


...no, not like that, that's something that actually happens in the book. Silly me.

I loved that part.

One thing I loved about the books is how realistic they were. I can only think of two instances with no logical explanation (and there probably are, but I didn't get them) and I think that is nice to breath fresh air into a well-known story. I like the fact that it was set in the 5th century and that everything felt so... human. No (much) romanticism or medieval intrusions just a gritty realism.

But YMMV, of course.

I loved these books so damn much. I had ships and theories and a million possible AUs. I wrote meta as essays for English class and gave I copies to everyone on my holiday list for two years straight. I read them before I discovered online fandom, but they were probably the first thing I ever properly fangirled over.
